Hi All,

I printed my first black and white photo today; this is what I did: converted my photo in Photoshop using Nik software and saved it as a PSD fine. I then opened it in Qimage, everything looked OK. I then printed it using Canon Photo Glossy II. I used a custom profile I made using the paper and Spyder Studio SR.

The image is very dark the sky in most parts is completely black and not what was displayed on my monitor.

Any help / advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi Shaun,
I have played with B&W printing, and I have a good friend who loves his B&W, and he experimented himself into a rubber room trying to get it perfect.
I found my best results using Epson Prem Glossy. (Every paper has its own personality when making B&W on color ink jet paper with a color driver.

My friend gets his best results with his Epson Printer set to ABW mode; a built in B&W RIP for making B&W prints.
I don't know if the Canon has that type of set.

I have no idea about what NIK did or what you did in PS, or what kind of profile you made....

I am not inclined to go over board for making B&W prints. Once in a while I come across a dead tree shot or a lonely fisherman shot with a wise wrinkled all knowing face that might look better in B&W, so I get my Epson Premium Glossy into the printer with the matching profile, or sometimes, I'll set Qimage Ultimate to LET PRINTER MANAGE COLOR with the driver set to ICM.
Then I put my color image into the queue in Qimage Ultimate, and right click on the Thumbnail image, select Pre-defined filters.
When that opens, I select the B&W filter, (usually the second one, since it starts with a B).
Now I'm all set to print.

There must be some better information on B&W out there for you.
Someone will be along soon.

Fred

If only this black and white print is dark and your colour prints are dark too (but you've not said that yet), I'd say you monitor is set too bright.
Assuming the monitor is ok. the I would suspect the profile assuming all the driver settings are ok and match the the driver settings used to print the target.
While on that subject how are you printing targets for printer profiles? Colour management must be OFF in the printing software. QU has a special JOB to make the set-up easy. Ask if you are not sure about this.
As a way of checking the profile, either make a print on Standard Canon Paper and use their profile, or another paper that supplies a profile for the paper and your printer. The final option is to set QU so the "Driver manages Colour". Read the context Help on how to set the driver, click F1 when in the window.

Hi Terry-M and All,

Very sorry about the delay in replying (work) I have everything set OK and I am happy with QU and my printer settings. I have also been doing a lot of reading regarding B&W photography – I have a lot to learn!

All other prints are fine regarding my monitor so I guess it is OK. I use a Spyder 3 meter, which I guess is also a minimum requirement. I do have an X rite meter and CalMAN 4, which I use to calibrate my Projector and what a learning curve CalMAN is! I also have the PC add-on so I could try it out.

I have been doing some test prints. However, I have used Canon’s Photo Rag for black and white and I am pleased with the results, So at this stage I am not concerned with my dark glossy print. I feel I have to get used to how B&W looks before I print as I have a tendency to use a red filter and the print never looks good.

Kind regards and CheeRS

Shaun,
Generally if the print is darker than your screen then your screen is too bright.
perhaps you have fixed it by now.
have a great day
