I've been using colour managed printing for 16 years since I bought my first monitor calibration device and I started using printer profiles. It was a Gretagmacbeth (now Xrite) Eye-One Display device. I now have an Eizo hardware calibration monitor (data stored on the monitor not via the graphics card) and recently thought my old Eye-One Display was not now giving me the best performance for the monitor matching a print, particularly with some colours. I've always been proud of the fact that my monitor view closely matched prints without the need for test prints and tweaking, unlike some of my photo club colleagues! I have just retired my old calibration device and replaced it with an Xrite i1 Display Pro. There is a cheaper version but that was not compatible with the Eizo calibration software. Today, after calibrating my monitor, I compared 10, A3 and half A3+ prints, on various papers, I have made recently for club competitions. I used an Ott-Lite alongside my monitor to illuminate each print. I compared colours, shadow areas and highlights and I'm very pleased to say the monitor matched the prints very well, in fact perfectly in my view 8) QU makes setting up Colour Management very easy as well being able to save all the set-up variations for paper, printer etc. etc. So, I hope this little post will encourage you to fully embrace CM if you not done so already. Well, I hope you become active again very soon, maybe when it's a bit warmer.I had some Amazon vouchers given to me so the net cost was a little less. There is a cheaper instrument "Xrite i1 Display" (no "Pro") but that is not compatible with the Eizo software for hardware calibration. I don't know what the differences are, functionality seems to be the same. Maybe the sensor is a better quality. Terry |
