Hello,

My 2nd Epson R1800 has clogged it's heads for the last time. So, it's time for a new printer. In my search for another 13" printer, I've come to the conclusion that the Canon PIXMA Pro9500 II is the one for me. (I've ruled out Epson). I like the specs and was hoping that my fellow Qimage users would have some words of wisdom that can guide me in the purchase decision.

What I like about the specifications is that it states the printer prints great b&w prints (something the Epson R1800 can't do). I also like the prospect of the straight through paper path for thicker paper.

I'm an advanced amateur, selling only a few prints per year, so I don't want to go larger, and certainly not smaller than 13".

Thanks in advance.

I have just ordered a printer - Epson R1900.

I did seriously consider the Canon Pro9500, as here in the UK it is offered at £100 cash back, I looked at all the printer reviews and info I could find and decided to go R1900.

Expect delivery in a few days, then the fun will start.

Good luck with the 1900. I've heard great things about it's capability to print superb b&w images. I got many, many good images from my 1800. But I am disappointed by it's premature aging, poor head cleaning process and options, and more. Hopefully Epson has cleared up these things in the new model.

I'm a little surprised by this - you initially mentioned blocked jets yet myself with an R800 and Fred, on this forum with an R1800, have had really good experience with those printers and no real problems with blocked jets. Both of us are keen print makers, perhaps you are even more prolific.  Wink I assume you used Epson inks, if not, that would be the source of the problem.

I'm not a B&W expert by any means, but the R800 does produce decent B&W prints which have done reasonably well in competitions. You do need a good custom profile though and the same would apply to a Canon printer. I would have not expect a B&W driver setting to do very well unless it was one of the more specialised printers.

JB,

Can't speak about the Mark II but if it is anything like the original PIXMA Pro 9500 you wont be disappointed. About three years ago I too ruled out the Epson and haven't regreted it. The Pro 9500 has produced hundreds of prints (including excellent black and whites) and never missed a beat, no clogging. I appreciate the quality of output, especially with QImage.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I've attached two images for your viewing pleasure. You'll recognize one of them as the Nozzle Check image. The other should be one continuous rectangle of yellow I printed from PowerPoint. About 10 "Head Cleanings" plus the paper towel/windex trick, and the print hasn't improved.

Therefore, I'm going to venture into Canon-land and purchase the Pro9500 II.
