Hello Mike et al,

A question: Would there be any advantage to, in addition to the standard Profile Prism colour IT8 reference chart to use an equivalent grey scale chart and generate an ICM specifically for use in printing "Black and White" photographs?"

That is, to generate separate ICMs for colour and black and white printing.

Merely curious.

What kind of printer and inks are you talking about.  Some might; some would not at ll.

Canon Pro 9500 with 10 pigment inks.

If it were an Epson with ABW (like the 2400/2880, etc.) I might think so.  Considering you only have Blk and Grey, you are going to be using a lot of color ink anyway.

I would print out one of the many grey step charts that are around and look for color shifts in the shadows and mid tones.   If you have to curve something to neutralize it, then you have something you can automatically add before printing.

Even with ABW I get different shifts that I have to correct, but I am using four different matte papers for B&Ws.  I don't have a metamerism issue.  The Pro 9500 prints very closely to the Epson in B&W though on matte art papers.

Thanks Seth

I print all my black and white photographs in "colour" mode and am very happy with the results. That mode would continue even if using a hypothetical custom BW ICM. Profile Prism does a very good job.

Mike: any tangible benefit in being able to generate both colour and BW profiles in a future version of PPrism?
