I have a photo restoration project to do for a friend, and have gotten out my old Epson Perfection 4870 scanner.
I remember having bought Profile Prism years and years ago to create scanner, camera and printer profiles.
Haven't used it is years!   (Evidence: the software is on a CD (c) 2001-2002, v 2.48!

Two questions:
Will the software load/run on my Windows 7 machine?  (I'll give it a try, I suppose.)
The "mixed bag" joke is that I packed all my PP materials in a sealed bag, and now I can't tell which target is the scanner target!   I have several targets, some labeled Printer Target, but others with many columns and one with 24 columns.   Are any of these the right target?

Does an unused scanner change its color accuracy?

I should note that these are b&w photos I'm scanning!    (Restoration-tips pages all say to scan in color though even for b&w)
But there's the principle of the thing...

Any recommendations welcome.

So that was quick:
The software I have is not compatible with Windows 7.

I renewed my membership and downloaded the software, installed it.

Amazing that it works after 22 years!   (I'm referring to both my scanner and Profile Prism!)

I'll write in with questions if others come up.

Thanks.

I've created the profile, and stored it in the default location for Windows.

Now I actually need to use the profile on my Macs.
Do I 'just' move the profile created by PP on the PC to /Library/ColorSync/Profiles
on my mac?

The Mac scanner software doesn't have anywhere I specify it to use a profile (that I can find, anyway).
Does all well-behaved scanner software pick up the correct profile?

The software I download from Epson is labeled:
"This file contains the ICA Scanner Driver v5.8.23 for Apple's Image Capture utility."

You can try that but I'm not aware of any scanner software that applies the profile for you.  You'd likely have to apply it in Qimage One, PS, or some other software.

I need to read some help docs, then!   Learned another new thing today!  Smiley

I don't see a place in Qimage One to apply a scanner profile (nothing under settings or edit/color management)

Any suggestions or should I write the Q1 forum?

Thanks, Mike.

I meant Qimage Ultimate: Qimage One doesn't have editing capabilities.  But any editing software should allow you to "assign" the scanner profile.

Cool.  That will work.

Since I prefer here days to work on my Mac, can I export a file I import in Ultimate so I can on it in Mac software that might not allow assigned profiles?

I want to play with some ai restoration tools other than photoshop.  If I can.

Thanks for 25 years of software and especially support !

Qimage Ultimate will let you embed the profile (say during a conversion).  If you use it on the Mac, it's up to the Mac software to be able to read embedded profiles.  Any color managed software should be able to do that.

I see where to set up a scanner/camera profile to embed.  (Edit/Preferences/Color Management)
But I don't see where to save them, unless it it right-click, File Operations/Copy Images

Or simpler to Right-click, Edit Images, and fill in the ICC override, and then File Operations / Copy Images?

I only have about a dozen of these to do, so efficiency is not a big deal.

I can't figure out a way to verify that Qimage One sees the image as having an embedded profile when I move the image to the Mac.

Separate question:
To use the .icm file created by Profile Prism on the PC, do I copy it to the Mac to the correct ColorSync/Profiles folder, and change the extension to .icc and that's it?   No "install" needed?
I ask this because when I try the above, it does not show up in the list of profiles in the Mac's Preview app (but it could be filtering those to be monitor or printer profiles).

I can't figure out a way to verify that the

Supposedly the Preview app on the Mac lets you assign a profile, but not embed it, fwiw.

^ Do this.  And then add the images to the live view and right click in the live view and select "Convert Images".  You can convert them to TIFF or JPEG: either will have the profile embedded.

As to the Mac, can't really help you as to how the Mac does color management.  If you embed the profile (per the above), you shouldn't have to worry about it nor would you need the profile (.icc file) itself on the Mac because it is embedded in the images.
