I'm creating a profile with VueScan Pro and an Epson V500 scanner. One thing that confuses me is that I don't understand how I can scan to a raw file, and yet reduce exposure so that I can reduce the number of clipped patches. Color adjustments, as I understand it, have no effect on the raw file output.

It occured to me that I should ask about printing the target. Would it be appropriate to reduce the brightness (in Qimage) before printing. Also, I'm a little unsure of print settings. I'm printing in AdobeRGB color space because that is what I use for my printing. I also have no profile set for the target print. I don't use the "printer manages colors" setting.

Qimage has a special "JOB" for printing targets, use that and you'll get the correct settings. Colour management has to be OFF! See screen shot attached to Recall the {Q} Printer Target Setup.job Terry

Thank you, Terry. It looks like I was using the correct settings. I now wish i could figure out how to reduce the exposure of the raw file, from the scan, in order to reduce the number of clipped patches.

Perhaps you could also attach a screen shot of your Vuescan output settings. I've attached mine below. Normally, a target scan is quite dark so don't be put off by that. Terry
PS. I assume you realise that Vuescan "raw" files are not the same as camera raw files, just tiffs with no adjustments by Vuescan.

Terry,
No patches are actually clipped, but are at maximum brightness. They are Patches: 0, 21-25, 45, 49, 69, 136-140, 160, 462, 433, 441, 903, 924, 1344, and 2983. I understand the concept of the raw files. In fact that's where I'm confused; If no color tab settings are applied, how can I adjust the overall brightness?

how can I adjust the overall brightness? You can't really. You seem to have 20 patches at maximum brightness and nothing clipped, that does seem to be a problem to me. I have checked one of my profile scans and I get 21 patches at maximum/minimum brightness on the printer target and produced a perfectly good profile. I suggest you go ahead and make the profile. One other point. PP is accurate & critical, so a message about 20 patches out of 9260 is nothing to worry about, even if they were clipped which they are not. Let us know how the profile turns out. Terry

Terry, the color balance looks pretty good, but the skin tones are definitely darker than what I have on the calibrated monitor. They also have a little more yellow, but I think that may be attributable to the darker tones.

Ouch! I still have a headache from trying to absorb VueScan, Profile Prism, QImage, etc. I'm not too sure of my skill at judging the needed correction. I'll have to dig out my old darkroom viewing filters. Anyway, Terry, you have been most patient, and thorough, and I thank you for that. You "are" a forum superhero.I'll get back and let yu know how this all works out. Wes
