I recently purchased PP and I just wanted to give a thumbs up report on the results.   Using an older but very good quality HP scanner and using the scan settings exactly as Mike recommends, I have had extremely consistent profiles generated across 2 different printers with 5 different papers.   I couldn't be more pleased.  I am a skeptic by nature but I am now a believer.

Hi Homer,
Just wanted to acknowledge that your words were read and appreciated.
You confirmed what I have said for years..... if you have a scanner that doesn't change the colors or blow out the exposures, PP is a gem.
If you don't have a scanner that works, then get one.

After that, it's a cinch!
Just don't overthink.... follow the instructions...
It works.
