OK. I understand that now.
That article does say "The first phase of adjusting the contrast, brightness, and color temperature requires adjustment of the monitor via the control panel on the front of the monitor."
So it is the monitor controls.
I've never use PP to calibrate a monitor as I have an Xrite EyeOne Display2 device. Like many photographers, I use the term "calibrate" to both adjust the monitor and make a profile with an associated LUT (look-up-table) that is loaded into the display driver.
