X-Rite DNG Profile Manager

I wonder if anyone has views on the X-Rite DNG Profile Manager.

There is a review/announcement on http://www.dpreview.com/news/1006/10060104xritecolorchecker.asp

All the reviews seem to indicate that it is the best thing since sliced bread, but all, including videos seem to use it in conjunction with Lightroom, PS etc. it is listed as a 'stand-alone' and I am wondering how it could be used with Qimage Studio.

Colourconfidence have a "FREE Colour Confidence Colour Expo (London) - 22nd June 2010" and product is listed.
I may attend but would like some background Qimage users view fist, ( best to know something about the subject first I think)

I would think DNG profiles are propriety to Adobe products; are they colour profiles like icc profiles or something else?
Qimage uses the international standard of icc profiles rather that something that attempts to tie you in to a particular company's products!

The DNG I presume refers to Adobe DNG raw files and the X-Rite DNG Profile Manager works only on DNG raws, that would be ok for me as I take in DNG in pref to Pentax raws, the files are smaller and I think a little better.

The prog is listed as plug in to LR and PS but also a Stand-Alone so I am wondering if it would work by using Qimage's "send to Photo Editor/Converter" do what ever and then back to Qimage.

I like to know a bit about what I am talking about before confronting a flash harry PS demonstrator, because I bet if I mention Qimage they will not know what I am referring to.

DNG Profiles work with Adobe DNG files as well as RAW files direct from the camera, in conjunction with Adobe software such as Adobe Camera RAW (the RAW plug-in for Photoshop) and Lightroom.

From what I understand, DNG Profiles can be more sophisticated than ICCs in that they can be dual-color and allow for interpolation between two different color temperatures within one color profile based on the white-balance of the RAW data; however, they are created with a 24-patch color-checker and as such may not be as precises as ICCs. DNG Profiles can also contain hue twists to keep colors looking better across a wide range of intensities, but the ones you can create with the public profile creators, either X-Rite's or Adobe Lab's one, they don't have hue twists.

"DNG is a free-to-use file format, launched over 5 years ago, used by about 15 camera manufacturers, about 200 software companies, and millions of photographers worldwide. It is recommended by the US Library of Congress as an alternative to all other raw file formats, which are "Not recommended". It is currently being used by ISO in its revision of ISO 12234-2."
