Title: Challenge #17 I showed you mine, now you show me...... yours!
Post by: Fred A on July 18, 2013, 10:47:10 AM
Previously, when trying to show you how simple and easy Qimage Ultimate makes your RAW images come to life with a minimum of fuss and sliders, we concentrated on how little you had to do and worry about.

Once again I ask that you bear with me...... wait a moment!
If these images are in Raw mode, then maybe you should bare with me.  ;D

I need to present you with a few samples that will likely need two posts to handle them.

Here we we see in Screen snap #091 and #096 two shots that Q-Ultimate decoded perfectly; keeping detail in the bright clouds, and not allowing the shadows to get too muddy either.

We had talked about the FILL slider in terms off adding fill light depending on the exposure, and I also mentioned that the Zero Fill light setting was as low as the automatic decoder would go.
Below that, you do it manually.

What I am saying is to try it... pull that FILL slider to the minus side.... see what you get; see what it changes; see how it *could* make a huge improvement to a somewhat hum-drum shot.

So let's look at screen snap #092 and 093.... 092 has a MINUS 12  Fill, and going even further, 093 has a minus 15 fill..  Probably a bit too much, but this is just a challenge!!

Look how the minus fill has changed the dynamic of the scene... added interest... (all in the eye of the beholder)
Can't add any more samples here so let's move on to the next post below. ..........................

OK here we are...
Look at the screen snap of the boat scene with minus fill light added!!
It changed an early morning peaceful water scene to James Bond escaping from the casino on the French Riviera!

That's a minus 11 fill... Of course you adjust yours to suit your image and your taste.

OK so your challenge is:
Show me YOURS!
Let's see your creative minus fill slider shots!
It's just for fun, no grades, no judgments, just see what you come up with.

Have Fun!

Fred

Funny you just raised this aspect.

A couple of weeks ago we had a club table top session - a raw session!

Just for practice I did mine in 5 shot HDR mode to practice with SNS-HDR

The expert consideration was that my resulting image was too bright.

OK, Take the base raw and just a few minutes with QU, adjust fill to minus 2, Sel-Col/smart boost, reduce the red a little, sharpen all except the red (getting a bit of noise)
engage noise reduction, create web size version.

Job done in just a few minutes.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

It'll take more than a few minutes to put that gear box & differential back together!  ;)
Interesting subject for table top, I like it. :)

OK. I took a photograph yesterday where initially I bumped the contrast in the image editor but then went back to refine and reduced Fill from 0 to -4 to give the same result.
See attached.
