Many of you know QU has the Cutout feature in the image editor to produce "masks" of various shapes and "frames" on images. One effect is to produce a vignette.
I've recently made a new set of Cutout images for vignettes with the aim of getting smoother transitions than I had previously.Check out the QU Help on Cutouts and how learn they work if you are not sure

That's the preamble, now for the challenge:
I've uploaded my new vignette cutout images to my Flickr account with some examples of their effect on an image.
You can see these and download the cutout images here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/terry-m_flickrphotos/sets/72157647286814284/.
To download, scroll down the images and click on the cutout image you wish to try. Then the download using the arrow lower right below the image - choose original size. See screen shot attached. Flickr converts my tiff files to jpeg but they seem to work ok. You will have to re-name the files to what it says on the image page, especially to include the Square brackets, eg. Vignette(2-1)[0,0,0]

Next copy the cutout image to the QU Cutout folder in App data: C:\ProgramData\ddisoftware\Qimage\Cutouts.

Your job is to use one or two of these cutouts in the QU editor for one or two of your images, show the result here and say how you think it enhances the image, or not!

If you get stuck, come back here for more detailed instructions.

Thanks Terry.
This is an excellent challenge and it teaches us more about using Qimage.
I find that I prefer subtlety when using VIGNETTE cutouts.  I rather my prints look natural with a touch of enhancement.
So I experimented with a few of Terry's  Vignettes and selected this one.
It is very subtle, but I promise you it works.
I printed the image below on A3 Epson Ultra Luster, and I brought it to my favorite small restaurant where the owner, Alma, will hang my prints that she likes.
The comments were awesome. The Vignette brought out the subject to its fullest promise.

Some prints look better with a border, and some look better with a vignette... you have to experiment.

Top screen snap, 037 is plain
038 has the subtle vignette (top and bottom)

Fred
I changed to a smaller screen snap. So they would match

Here's one, same image, with a not so subtle vignette.

Hello Terry

You must have a sixth sense.

I had a half hour to spare yesterday and started to create a Christmas card with a vignetted image, text, and clip art etc all on one page.

Question. Is there a way to save the work as a job so that I can come back later and rework?  Or do I have to go all the way and print to file?  my attempts to save to job failed!!!

I never get these creations right at one session.

Hi Jeff,
Glad to hear you are having a go!

Yes and there's more than one way.
If you have the printer set up in QU as you plan to print with paper type and driver settings, then save as a Print Job with a suitable name.
If you haven't decided on the paper type and want flexibility for that, then save as a Session.
If you want t to continue developing the design, just recall the Session, easy!
When recalling a Session ready for printing, I recommend recalling you printer set up first (assuming you have those saved) before recalling the Session.

Don't forget to share a screen shot here when it's done

Jeff,
I get nervous about losing all the work I put in.
I save it over and over, using the "J" button, and I save as a JOB.
That saves everything...the images, the layout and paper, sizes etc.

Interesting.

Yesterday could not save as job, session or anything else.

A glitch on my win 7, or could even be in my head.

Good morning sir,
Did you get an error message?  What makes you say that you couldn't save anything?
Sometimes, I forget the name I devoted to the SAVE, and I can't find it later.
Then I click on the top of the DATE column and find the latest save.

No error messages, they just did not save.  Or if they saved they could not be recalled.

A glitch on my Win 7, because when I started again yesterday all worked fine, except the saved jobs from Sunday would not recall.

Alls well that ends well as we say.

Hello all.

Now here attached is my Christmas card creation.

The theme was to keep it simple, on 'cheap' paper and not use too much ink.

Designed for A4 paper folded to A5

Black and White Front cover and back

Colour centre pages.

The most time consuming bit was searching for suitable clip art, then making any backgrounds transparent

Critical Analysis awaited

A beauty.. Wonderful card.

One tiny question.
Why is Barbara's name first and Jeff is second?

Hi Jeff,

You have not used the Vignette image as I intended but as a standard Cutout without any colour designation in the file name in square brackets.
That's ok of course but by using the format suggested in my first post, you can vary the colour. Normally for a Vignette that would be black, eg. Vignette(2-1)[0,0,0] where the RGB numbers in the square brackets specify the colour.
When used, the "black" vignette does not show black but shades of grey due to the grey tones in the cutout image which control transparency.

I thought I'd better mention this so other users understand why your vignette is white.  Wink

Will have to go back to square one -  original post -  and start again.
