Hello:

I'm new to this program and this forum. My name is Bob.

I have installed Qimage Ultimate Demo preparatory to buying it. I've been using this for the past couple of days and have been through the "Learn by Example" site (a marvellous idea that other software companies could learn from), "Help" within the program itself, this and other forums here and, finally, Googling the world. I still have many unanswered questions; this one involves the "Done" Button as well as the "Save As" function.

In every other Windows program I've ever used the "Save As" function puts the edited file back in the same folder the original file came from. They also put the original file name in the name bar, the text cursor is flashing in the name bar, and sometimes the entire name and file extension is highlighted or just the name is highlighted.

In Ultimate when I hit the "Done" button after applying filters to a photo it takes me to a popup that give me several choices. If I choose the "Associate" section it saves the file in the original folder with its original name, effectively replacing the original photo. I know the filters are placed on the photo, the original is still there, and I can remove the filters anytime in the future; but you can't view the edited photo except through Qimage. If, however, I choose the "Create new images" section it appears I must browse my way to the folder the photo came from. I also must then put in the name I want for the photo.

If I use File>Save As from the menu bar it takes me to the same folder as the "Create new images" section makes me try to use and, again, I have to put in a name.

I'm telling you all this so you can see what my experience is based on and you can the point out the errors of my ways.

Now, is there some way to configure this program so I can get it to do as I stated in paragraph 2 above? The reason I'd like this is, as stated in the subject line, productivity - time is spent finding folders and entering names. My beefing about putting in a name may sound petty but, over the years I've worked out a system in which I add letter suffixes to edited file names so they are together, in order, in their folder. Entering the letter "a" is easier and faster than entering "Algonquin_Park_Chickaree_Lake_27a" when the original name was "Algonquin_Park_Chickaree_Lake_27." There's also less likelihood of typos!

I'm confident someone can help me out here.

Bob-
I think one of the best features of QU is that it never changes the original file. The way most of us use it, we hit "Associate" (actually, it's the default) when we have finished editing. That does NOT change the original file, it just saves a "filter" file, that contains all the edits we have done. So at any time, we can go back and re-edit, or even dump all the edits and start over with the original file. So then, the next time we access the file, QU uses the filter file which it has saved automatically, and recreates our edits. Since I print with QU also (that's what it does best), this works perfectly with my work flow. The only reason I can think of that I would want to save the edited file including the edits in the file, is if I needed to send the file to someone else to print. If that's what you need, I'm sure Terry or Fred can tell you the easiest way to do it.

Hi Bob,
We'll certainly try  Wink
Are you working from raw files or camera jpeg's? It doesn't make a huge difference to what I shall say about making new copies of images though.
Jeff is right, not many users would not regularly use Save As because many would be printing direct from Qimage.
Uses for a new image could be to send by e-mail or edit in another program.
However there other quicker ways of making a copy of the image with the edits included.
Remember, Qimage Ultimate is a program with strong batch processing capabilities so rather that saving from the editor, it's much easier to place a set (even if it is just a set of1) in the queue and go from there and this makes naming the new images easier because there are automatic naming feature available.
2 ways to make another copy with edits included, right click over the page preview of images in the queue for the menu:
1. Convert images; this is the most sophisticated with options to add additional filters (edits) like resizing, change the colour space, choose the file type, choose/create a new folder.
The same file name is used with or without a {Q} in the file name.
2. Make E-mail/Web copies; these are always jpeg's, a folder can be created automatically but later batch runs would over-write anything in that folder. A new folder can be specified.
The original file name is used but new versions are numbered "file name(0002)" etc.

There is also a feature, from the thumbnails, to re-name a whole batch of images in a folder.

Hopefully that is a start to get you going with some of the QU features for making new versions of images. Please come back and ask when you need to.
Have you seen the Learning videos, they are great. http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage-u/learn.htm

Terry-M:

Thanks for the quick reply - it seems a standard of yours from what I've read in this forum.

Sorry, I should have mentioned I'm working exclusively with JPEG format photos for now.

Okay, I've now used the right-click on the page preview and chosen "Covert Images." In the popup that follows I chose "Add to/replace existing filters" and then cancelled the next popup that appears as I don't want anymore filters. Clicking OK then adds a new .jpg photo in the folder with same name and the suffix of "{Q}" or "{Q}{Q}" or "{Q}{Q}{Q}" depending on how many times I've chosen the same photo with or without filters. The {Q}s are actually a nice touch saving even inputting the letter suffix I usually use. This new image also incorporates the filters imbedded right in the photo and so can now be seen using Windows Photo Viewer in which I can toggle back and forth between the original photo and the one with filters included. The only hitch in the flow is getting rid of the "Add to/replace existing filters" popup and that only requires using the mouse or Alt+F4.

All-in-all a rather satisfactory fix for this problem. Thanks for the help.

Please come back and ask when you need to.

As the old saying goes: "Be careful what you ask for (paraphrased)."

The next problem is text on photos but I'll start another thread for that when I've sorted out the information I require.

Bob-

Even easier, after you click Convert Images, the next box pops up with "Apply associative filters" as the default, already selected, so no need to go through the "Addto\Replace" route.  The Apply associative filters is what you want to do, if I understood correctly. So save two clicks. If I didn't understand correctly, nevermind  Roll Eyes
