You created a custom crop and that custom crop was created with no border.  When you use a B border, adding or removing a border changes the size of the photo and thus the aspect ratio.  So in essence, you changed the aspect ratio of the printed photo so that it no longer matches what you cropped: it then removes the crop because it no longer applies to a photo of the new size.  Using a B+ border would solve the problem, else you would have to re-crop to create a new custom crop based on the new size of the photo.

Yes, that's what I was suggesting.  Just to give an example to try to help with the understanding...

Let's say you have an 8x10 photo with no border and you adjust the crop to your liking.  That crop is saved so that whenever you add that same photo at a size that is a 4:5 aspect ratio, it uses your preferred crop.  So if you pick a size of 4x5, 8x10, 16x20, etc. it'll know what crop you like for a photo of those dimensions (aspect ratio) and it'll bring back that preferred crop on that particular photo.  This remembering-the-crop saves a lot of time because you've already specified what you want cropped in/out in that instance (for a 4:5 aspect ratio) and it is brought back in the future so you don't have to do it again.

Now let's say you add a .25 inch border in "B" border mode.  Because you are adding the border inside the 8x10 print size, the print (photo plus borders) will still be 8x10, making the photo inside the borders 7.5 x 9.5 inches.  Now it won't bring back the 8x10 crop and you have to start over because the new aspect ratio of 7.5:9.5 doesn't match what you cropped at 8:10 (4:5).  Rather than trying to bring back a 4:5 crop that you designed, which won't match the new 7.5:9.5 ratio, you have to recrop at the new aspect ratio.  If it tried to bring back an 8x10 crop on a 7.5x9.5 photo, you'd end up with a crop that is slightly different than what you specified.  So that's basically the software telling you, "I know what crop you want for an 8x10, but I don't know what crop you want for a 7.5x9.5".  Fortunately when you do specify a new 7.5x9.5 crop, it'll bring that back (remember it) too if you should add the same borders in the future.

Using B+ borders avoids this because that keeps the photo at 8x10 inches and adds the .25 inch border outside the photo size.  Of course, if you are trying to fit photo+border inside an 8x10 frame, that's not useful... but when you use the "B" border option, you have to recrop it because your 8:10 crop is no longer applicable once you add inside (B) borders.
