I've emailed Mike several times with no reply so I'm hoping someone may be able to help me.

As the subject line indicates, my printer (Epson 9900) hangs when I choose Advanced B&W in Qimage. The only time it worked was via Photoshop CS6 on my mac pro. All other attempts have failed. I've tried using the following setups:

Mac pro running Windows 7 Ultimate on a dedicated Windows Hard Drive.

Mac laptop with bootcamp partition running Windows 7 Ultimate.

IBM laptop with Windows 7 Professional.

All of my computers have the latest printer driver and I have also allowed (via Qimage) the Epson driver to handle color but with the same results. Also, I've trashed my driver and Qimage and then reinstalled both to no avail.

I don't want to use Photoshop as the sharpening algorithim in Qimage is wonderful but I may have to as I have portfolio reviews in less than two weeks.

I'd appreciate any advice!

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,
Let's get some information for Mike.
OK ABW is part of the driver.... right? I have used it on Epson 3800 printers.
Can you describe in better detail, "HANGS"?

1) Across the lower right of teh screen, after clicking OK to print, does the progress bar move from left to right?
2) Does it say 1 thumb found; then Processing One Image; then 100% Finished, and then hangs?
3) Where did it stop?
4) If you select Print Preview in the driver, will the print preview box open to show you the print?
5) Are lights blinking that would indicate that data is going to the printer?
6) Does the printer start to print and then hangs?
7) Are you using a pre-saved printer set up; one that you recall in Qimage when you use certain paper or for B&W?
8 ) What are your settings in the driver. Remember QU remembers driver settings, and a corrupted or wrong setting will be implemented every time.
9) Have you tried HELP... RESET PRINTER, and then go to printer page setup in Qimage and manually set the quality setting, the paper type, and color management settings, and then try a print?

Fill in as much as you can, and we can solve this.

Thanks for responding, Fred. In a nut shell - everything seems to go smoothly. Qimage appears to send the image file to the printer driver and makes the usual sound after a print is sent. Also, my printer indicates that it's "PRINTING" via the small on-board monitor/interface. Unfortunately that's where everything comes to a screeching halt. You wouldn't know it if you were a casual onlooker. As a matter of fact... most of the members here might think that I'd uploaded a 15' pano tiff and it was just a matter of waiting. I even let it sit for 20 minutes just to be sure.

I'll try to answer as many of your questions now but will likely have to run another print through to cover anything I overlooked. So...

1. The progress bar moves across - shows 100% and makes the usual noise after sending the job.
2. I can't confirm all of those states but they sound right - I'll run another job to confirm.
3. It (If you mean Qimage) seems to have done it's job. If you mean my printer, it runs the head across a portion of the sheet as usual and then parks itself as if awaiting further instructions. During this time the printer (w/ the monitor indicating "PRINTING") sits and the vacuum runs. Nothing more. I ultimately have to cancel the job and then power down the printer.
4. Yes
5. I want to say yes as lights do flash but I haven't bothered to discern if they blink differently as opposed to a run that doesn't hang.
6. The printer never attempts to print - see #3
7. I don't think I've ever made a pre-save for anything.
8. I'll take a look
9. Haven't tried that!

Thanks again, Fred! I'll check back in.

So far everything points to a corrupted driver or a printer problem.... as Qimage has sent / is sending data to the printer driver.... Print Preview shows that.
I thought of another two things to look at.

In the printer driver, do you have any sort of port sharing; do  all the computer installations use the same port? Is the port SHARING?
Last thing I can think of is that Qimage sends more data and uses larger chunks to feed the printer.
Check the setting in EDIT, PREFERENCES, PRINTER OPTIONS and see if you are set similar to my screen snap paying attention to where the cursor points; RAW.
Also check this area.......... Printers and Devices....Right click selecting Printer Properties, Click ADVANCED, and uncheck the lower box (see screen snap) that says ENABLE Advanced Printing features.
Let us know if that helped.

I replied via email but now I realize after seeing your followup from yesterday, you must not have gotten my response.  My suggestion was Fred's #9 above: try using Help, Reset Printer Settings in QU.  Then when you go back into QU, set up the driver manually via File, Printer Setup and be sure NOT to load any saved setups or jobs.  Resetting the printer and manually setting the driver settings from scratch could fix the problem if it is related to bad driver settings being remembered by QU.

Fred and Mike,

I did the reset yesterday but nothing changed. However, I’m hopeful considering that the screen shots Fred posted indicated I had the wrong setting in Print Spooler - I had it set to “EMF - Fast Printing” and the driver’s “Enable advanced printing features” was checked. I’ll try changing them.

Also… I jotted down a couple of notes last night re: another issue which may not have anything to do with my problem but I want to give you as much info as possible as it may mean something to you.

My last attempt at printing yesterday shows the driver with that job in the queue and “Status” indicates “Printing” which is obviously false. So I tried to clear it via Qimage (the far right icon depicting a Printer with a red X). When I hover over it with my mouse it reads “Clear spooler/jobs from EPSON Stylus Pro 9900” but it doesn’t work. Consequently I have to go into “Devices and Printers” and right click and choose “See what’s printing”. This allows me to clear the spool via “Cancel All Documents”.

Gentlemen,

I've done the following on two laptops (IBM running Windows 7 Pro & MacBook Pro with bootcamp partition w/ Windows 7 Ultimate):

Reset Printer Settings under Qimage "Help"

Reset Printer Settings via OS as well

Changed Print Spooler/Format to "RAW - Large Prints"

via Qimage - I went to File/Printer Page Setup... and made sure everything was proper

I also bypassed Qimage and went into the driver via the OS and confirmed it was showing the same settings as Qimage

In Properties/Ports it shows only one port checked (USB001 - Virtual printer port for USB - Epson Stylus Pro 9900) and bidirectional support is checked

In Properties/Advanced I unchecked "Enable advanced printing features"

Unfortunately I'm still unable to print via Advanced B&W. The only thing I haven't tried is changing Print Quality settings.

Chris

You can print a regular color print, right?
Qimage is sending the same printer file either way. Your printer driver in ABW mode is acting to make a B&W print.

The problem has to be in the driver somewhere.

I think I found the solution. You have to try it. Others have your problem too. 7900 and 9900
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1572323?start=0&tstart=0

Process Job by Printer has to be turned off.

Please let me know.

Fred beat me to the punch.  Smiley  I was going to say, there's no difference in the data that is being sent by QU.  If it works in color mode and doesn't work when you switch the driver to B/W, the driver itself is at fault.  Please take a look at Fred's link and let us know if that helps.
