I'm processing my raws when I download the images from my memory card, and save them as tiffs.
I have the "develop raws after they are copied/moved" option checked.
What I'm seeing is a very subtle change between the Raw file and the tiff....tiffs looks better.
Don't get me wrong, the edits look perfect to me,and I'm very happy with QU,it saves me a lot of time

Can someone tell me ,exactly what changes are, taking place?...
Exposure,saturation,sharpness,levels??...all of the above?

Thanks
MikeS

The only thing I can think of might be the selected color space for the TIFF being different from the color space for the RAW.
I just came back from a ride to the waterfront and I had new shots on my card.
I went into Settings in Flash Card Copy Move, and told Qimage to make a set of Tifs at the same time.
I took a half dozen so far and place the tif side by side in the Comparator in Qimage, and using Right click SWAP, I cannot tell which is which.
The color space is the same for the tif and the raw.
If I convert the Tif to a different color space, then I can see a difference.
Are you using a raw profile for your camera?
Maybe that might be it???

..After careful viewing of both tiff & raw,and I put both files in the que for printing ,and then printing both..they are absolutely identical.
Not sure what to say---Daaa,,User error,as usual.

Yes,I'm using the profile {Canon 5DII} that Mike sent me..

Thanks Again,

Mike,
Sometimes, it's a good idea to put two images into the comparator. Then use the right mouse menu and select SWAP.
That exchanges sides of the monitor.
You will be amazed at the difference in brightness (and therefore saturation) from one side of the monitor to the other.
Sometimes, it is teh monitor, and sometimes, it's the angle at which you are viewing.

All of that in an intelligent way.
Mike's" smart" auto raw processing is what is taking place, just the same as when you open a raw QU. You have some control with noise reduction, sharpening and image profile in the QU Raw preference settings.

I'm wondering why you bother to do this.
With QU you can print directly from the raw and not converting as you download gives you the opportunity to Refine the raw image in QU and possibly get a better result for white balance, highlight recovery and fill. Especially for those for those "difficult! images. It also means you can apply a filter to the raw image; Tone targeted sharpening being an obvious one to use.
Doing this means you only need convert to another format for e-mail/web or an external editor.

Sounds like you have not selected both images in the queue before clicking comparator. You should see both images side by side.

You need to select two image in the queue. Then go to the comparator.
SWAP is grayed out when you only put one image in the comparator.
Just hold the control key (one way to do it) and click on each image. Then Right click into the comparator.

Terry,
So what you are saying is that I don't have to do anything with most raws, once they are downloaded, correct?
Mikes profile  is auto processing the raws ?
If need be,I can edit them further if I want.?
No need to convert to 16 bit tiffs for printing,then...just print the raw .

Hi Mike,

That is correct. It depends on the original conditions at time of taking. If it's a high contrast image or white balance is off, then it's more likely refine is required to get the full tone range in bright and shadow areas.

If you mean the Camera icc profile, not really. The icc profile converts the colours as the camera "sees" them for your monitor or printer. Most camera profiles have a wide gamut compared to say sRGB or Adobe RGB so you benefit in that way.

Yes.
Mike's auto processing is how his programming magic "looks" at the tonal range and exposure of the image and adjusts it to look good. With "difficult" images it's not necessarily perfect so that's when you use the Refine screen.
There's even more scope by using the editor after refine, especially with Tone Targeted Sharpening but the normal editing functions are there too.

That's right.  Cool
Raw images are 12 or 14 bit and most printers are 8 bit so QU only does 8 bit printing. Check out Mike's articles for more information.

If you need help with the Refine process, I wrote a guide a little while ago but it is now out of date because the Refine screen now has new features. It will be of some help on things not fully covered in the new videos.
You can see that here http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage/Qimage%20RAW%20-%20A%20Guide%20R6.pdf
The up-to-date information for QU Raw processing is on the learning videos, "Lightning Raw" and "Raw Refine"
