Author Topic: Canon PRO-1000 driver settings don't stick - Windows 10  (Read 6254 times)

I saw a similar thread regarding a Canon PRO-100 dating back to 2017; but nothing there has helped to identify and fix my issues :

- Windows 10 (all updates installed)
- Qimage Ultimate (just bought last week)
- Canon PRO-1000, latest driver

When I set the Print Quality to highest through Qimage, then close the dialogue box, then reopen, it reverts back to standard.  If I check Always Print with Current Settings, then it works.  But, if I change paper type back and forth, it reverts back to standard.  I've tried as many combinations of checking Always Print with Current Settings or not, different paper profiles, using printer preferences outside Qimage, using printer preferences inside Qimage.  Nothing works.

Note that this all works on my Windows 7 system, no issues, so I am pretty confident it isn't user error unless there is something different between Windows 7 and 10 that I am doing wrong - Qimage remembers all printer settings per paper type.  I'm assuming that is how it should work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am having a bit of confusion following your steps.
I set everything from the Qimage Properties button which accesses the driver. I never check always use these settings.
See screen snaps below.
I set my tabs as you see them using Matching at NONE and Quality as BEST, and the correct paper type and size.
When I click OK out of the driver, the Property button in Qimage should show a green check mark.

As for restarting Qimage to hold settings on a restart, Unlock the padlock upper left of screen, make your changes, and reset padlock clicking on use current settings.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Here are my steps :

1) click Media Type button = set to photo paper pro platinum
2) click Driver Setup = canon driver properties dialogue box pops up, set print quality to Highest, click OK, dialogue box closes
3) see the green check market next to Driver Setup: Properties
4) click Driver Setup = canon driver properties dialogue box pops up, see print quality is set to High, NOT Highest

Somehow, the setting doesn't stick!

I have the latest Pro-1000 driver and latest Windows 10.  When I repeat your steps, the quality setting of "Highest" sticks as do all the other settings changes I make in the driver.  This is with the "Always print with current settings" box UNchecked at all times.  So there are two possibilities:

(1) You are using the Pro-1000 XPS driver: don't do that!  The Canon XPS drivers do not work properly with anything other than Canon's software and if used in Qimage, PS, Lightroom, Affinity, etc. will have serious driver bugs.  Use the regular (non-XPS) driver instead.

(2) You had some previous settings that are incompatible with the current driver you are using.  To fix this, with the Pro-1000 printer selected, click the "Reset preferences to printer defaults" button next to the "Properties" button where you open the driver.  Then click "Printer" to clear all the stored Qimage settings for that printer.  After that, set up the driver settings again using the "Properties" button.  That process normally clears any issues that are caused with updated drivers or Windows versions that make previously recorded settings cause issues in the driver.

Hi Mike,

Your suggestion on resetting to printer defaults mostly worked!  One exception - when I go to schedule an unclog job and use the properties button on the unclog job panel, the quality setting doesn't stick for me.  I select highest, then OK, then when I click properties again, it shows standard.  So it doesn't stick for the unclog jobs.

But it works for normal printing.

Any ideas?

I presume your unclog job(s) must be broken too: you'll have to delete those.  Open the unclog jobs from the File menu and look to the right of the dropdown for unclog job: click the red X to delete the unclog job for your Pro-1000.  After you've deleted it, use the dropdown to see if there are any remaining for the Pro-1000: if so, select those one by one and delete them.  If the Pro-1000 is your only printer, you should continue to use the red X until you see "Click + to create your first..." which indicates all unclog job setups have been deleted and the list is empty.  After that, close QU and reopen it and all the issues with old driver settings should have cleared.

It seems to work now!  I will try a couple of unclog jobs and prints over the next day or two.

Hi Mike,

Can you explain the statement above?  I just used my Pro100 XPS driver a few days ago with Qimage and didn't have any issues.  What could happen using it?  Thanks.

The XPS drivers don't communicate properly with Windows.  The XPS drivers report the wrong margins, wrong offsets, wrong canvas size, and other issues.  These issues lead to problems like prints appearing in the wrong place on the page, wrong size, having lines through the prints, etc.  It isn't possible to describe these in specific cases because each driver (for each model) is different and since the bugs depend on paper size, resolution chosen, and other settings, they don't always occur.  But if you keep using the XPS driver, eventually these bugs will surface.  One thing that seems to make the bugs more prevalent is using media sizes of 13x19 inches or larger.  That is, the problems with margins and registration of the printer's canvas (left, right, top, and bottom offsets) seem to surface more often on larger sheets.  But even then, they are hard to reproduce when you want to... but will surface when you least expect them.

The Canon software seems to work OK with the XPS drivers presumably because they talk to the drivers directly (instead of through Windows like all other software).  Long story short, just don't use the XPS drivers.  They offer zero benefit and come with the down side of potential bugs.
