Hello Mike et al

Have just started using a Canon Pro-1000 printer (A2, a recent release) and am wondering if QIU is reading the printer parameters correctly. Specifically the maximum DPI. I have two Windows 10 Pro boxes. One I routinely use for printing and the other is an operational backup of QUI.

On the main PC the max DPI for the printer is listed as 600 while on the second PC it shows as 1200. I have reset the printers in both QUIs and checked the driver setup on both installations. Everything appears identical.

Any explanation?

Thanks

Peter

PS the only difference the I can spot between the two PCs is that the main one is 64bit and the other 32bit.

Hi Peter,
I downloaded the driver for the new printer Canon Pro 1000
(Rave reviews)

I have been playing for a while  trying to get 1200 x 1200.  to show up.
See screen snap.

The criterion for which mode the driver uses (1200 or 600) seems to be determined by the media selection, and that is also trimmed by the paper size as not all types of paper come in all sizes.
So what are your choices for paper type in the driver that reports 1200 x 1200?

Peter, Follow up...
No matter what combination I try, 600 x 600 is the top as the driver wioll not allow (grayed out) a highest quality setting.

I too have 64 bit.
Maybe someone with 32 bit W 10 can try?

Thank you very much for your efforts Fred. Most appreciated.

I wonder if the choice of icc paper profile when the printer was first loaded into QIU makes a difference.

For the secondary PC (the one with 1200DPI) I first loaded the Ilford factory profile (for the particilar printer andpaper) which seems to be a generation "ahead" of the Prism produced profile, 2MB in size versus 471k, respectively and ICC version 2.1 versus 2.0.

Paper choice, resolution ("Highest") and page size are all the same.

Peter

Peter, Remember, QU reports on its screen what the driver reports to QU.
Printer profiles usually get placed in a Windows folder called C:\windows\System32\Spool\Drivers\Color
In the case of using a profile, you would set the driver to NONE.
Then select the appropriate printer profile from within QIU, in the appropriate location. (See snap)

This controls what print data will be sent to the driver. It would have no effect on what settings get "Grayed Out" in the driver.
I feel strongly that the 64 bit driver, is designed that way, whether by accident or design.

One more comment, I have a number of Canon Printer drivers installed so I can possibly help someone set his driver properly when the prints come out weird.
Usually, they have Scaling turned on.
However, all these drivers are for my 64 bit Windows, and even the $3000 + models will not reach 1200 x 1200.

Logically, there would be no need for a higher output resolution especially with large prints, making only unacceptable file sizes.
According to the Canon Driver download page, the 32 bit driver is a different breed.

If anyone with a 32 bit Windows machine wants to try it  see above link.

Thanks Fred.

Yes, I understand and practise everything you said.

At 600 DPI the Pro-1000 produces excellent prints and the output is a generation ahead of with my old Canon Pro9500 (which I was very happy with before cyan died).

My quandary is more academic .... why the resolution difference between the two installations. Is it something esoteric like the 16/32 bit mode of Windows? Possibly something else.

Mike: will you be updating the icc version of the Profile Prism generated printer/paper profiles?

Again, thanks.

Regards

Peter

I don't plan to update the ICC version because for LUT profiles, they are identical (no benefits from 2.1 versus any prior version).  They are just simple look up tables.  The file size of the ICC profile is dictated by the number of entries in the look up table.  The PP ICC profiles are designed around the printed target: they are 21x21x21 3D tables to match the printed target.  If you see other profiles that are much larger in file size, it's just because they are interpolating more data points: no one has a printed target with more patches than PP (over 9000) so they are just extrapolating data and making a larger file.  No need to do that because the ICC CMM (color management model) already does that internally.

Update:

After a couple of days using QIU with the new printer, "1200 DPI" has suddenly appeared in the Job Properties and Preferences-Printing Options listing.

Interesting!

Peter,
Did you get a driver update, or even a W 10 update in the past couple of days?  I got a W 10 update on Friday night.
I am going to try my copy of the Pro 1000 and see what happens.

Media Type

Paper size.

Borderless OFF

Color Intensity   (I have Manual/ settings/NONE) Yiou have???

Quality? Custom or Highest?

Let me match... also asking about Driver version. I think I detected a Euro version of the driver.   That might be different too. Mine is Version 2.96.2.70

Hello again Fred.

First screen.... Photo Printing or BEST? - "Standard" is highlighted but didn't use the common presets. Don't have "Best" listed.

Photo Paper Pro Platinum (I use that as a default - but use my own custom ICCs for Ilford papers)

A4

Borderless OFF

Colour Mgmt - Matching = None

Highest  (= "2" under Custom, "1" is greyed out)

Driver version is exactly the same as yours, although downloaded from a different region

Hope that helps.

Peter

Hi Peter,
I cannot get 1200 x 1200 DPI no matter what combination I try.
Thanks for going to all that trouble. I usually like to solve puzzles, but this will have to remain a puzzle.

Terry and I have Epson R2000 printers. Our Drivers are not exactly the samne.
Foe example, He lists a paper type of "Archival Matte"  My paper selection does not show that, but has "Ultra Premium Presentation Matte"instead
My driver shows "SUPER B" for 13 x 19; Terry's shows it as A3+

At least you have 1200 x 1200 on both computers...
Stay Well,
Fred
