Title: Changing Aspect Ratio Post by: donaldschoengold on March 18, 2015, 05:43:19 PM I am a new potential user of QImage and I am having problems with the interface. I have some prints that are going into a competition and the print size must be 8x10. I need to change the aspect ratio of my picture so that it is 8x10 without cropping and of the image. I know the picture will have a slightly different appearance but I can not afford to lose any of the picture.
I can't figure out how to do this in QImage. DON Don, what you are asking for is nothing more than "distortion" which Qimage will not do. But, he's something that might work for you. Remember, you likely have a 3:2 aspect ration from your camera as most DSLR will shoot that ratio. You really cannot change that to 5:4 without losing something from the image. Here's what to try Put the image into the Queue. Print size is 8 x 10 with Crop scissors on. Go ito the Page editor screen. Select the CROPPING TAB You will have your large image on the left and a small one in a little window in the upper right. Using your mouse (cursor becomes a hand) You can drag the small image toward or away from any red bars you see in that box. However, I just realized that the contest also accepts 8x12 which will work w/o cropping. Maybe I can live w QImage after all. I am going to try as so many people say that it is a great program. Distorting the picture will also destroy it too!If you wanted to retain the 3:2 aspect ratio within the 8x10 envelope then crop scissors have to be off and the print size will be 6.67 x 10". I'm surprised anyone specifies a print for competition in that way; a maximum dimension is more realistic if an unmounted print is required. Removing the flexibility on aspect ratio also restricts the photographers artistic freedom. My club competitions merely specify a maximum mount external size of 16x20" (or 400 x 500mm) and this allows for any size and aspect ratio of print that will fit in that mount. Whether one should use it is another question.
