Post by: JeffR on January 01, 2019, 06:35:42 PM
I am running QU v2019.107, Win 10. When performing the above program freezes. Only way out is to have task manager end program

What happens with a different folder of of images open in Qimage with a different set of thumbs?
Maybe just some corruption in the offending folder?

Somehow,  I can't seem to grasp exactly what you are doing.
You click FILE and then OPEN FILE?
Here's where I am not following.
See screen snap 107   This is what you click. Then it immediately crashes?
I get: see snap 106. A box opens from where I can select another folder, and drill down to where I can select a single image.
I have never done this. I guess I could never find a reason to use it.
I click on (see snap 108) Open Folders; a different button, and select a folder for Qimage. It will open the folder, find the images, build thumbs, and cache files and show all the images in the selected folder. on screen as thumbnails (including the one single you might have fished out using FILE OPEN.
We also have the HISTORY drop down that remembers about 15 or more recently used  folders.

Now, I have to ask, if it crashes immediately upon clicking FILE and OPEN, how do you change folders?

Working for me as well.  I can only come up with two ideas that could cause this and both are related to trouble reading the files from disk.  One thought is that your anti-virus software may be preventing Qimage from reading the files.  For that one, try temporarily disabling your AV software to see if that makes any difference.  The second idea is that it may be taking a long time to read the file list, particularly if you are opening folders that have tons of images.  This is especially true if you are accessing a network drive as they are notoriously slow to read file information even when you are not opening the files (it still has to read file names, dates, etc.).  For this one, as a test, maybe just wait a long time to see if the file list eventually comes up.  If you give it something like 10 minutes and they finally appear, at least we know it's a "slow file reading" problem and we can go from there.

Regards,
Mike

Hi.  Admittedly this is not a major issue, but I’m not quite sure what the problem is. Previously, I thought the issue was my images are mostly on an external HD, but even with that drive off, program freezes when I click on File>open files. Open folders works fine. Can you enlighten me as to when I should be using this option or help troubleshoot why this is happening?

Thanks

This is really a long shot, but are you using any sort of automated cloud back-up software?  A few years ago, I was using one of these - Mozy I think - and even though I had all the parameters and settings to say it would run only in the background and only when everything else was idle, I found that if I did a file open from any software, I might as well break for lunch while waiting for the drop-down to appear. Apparently that command was causing any program to consider all of the available resources - including those cloud based.

As I say - a long shot, but worth a mention.

I've never encountered this problem or heard of it before.  I was guessing it could be slow file reads but even when I use File/Open on a folder with 2400 images, it opens quickly.  I guess it's possible that antivirus software is interfering.  Having said that, there really is little use for that function.  It is there primarily for poeple who are first trying the software: they look for "File", "Open" because that's what is used in single-image editing programs and if they don't find it, they don't know what to do (like use the thumbnail browser).  It does serve one niche purpose in that if you have a folder with a lot of images and you are only interested in one image you just saved, you can use "File", "Open" to locate that one image without having to load thumbnails for lots of images you don't want.  Unless you are doing something like that, just use the software as it was intended: use the thumbnail browser and just point it to the folder you are interested in.

To Mike, thanks for your reply. Will follow your suggestion. If I find out what the issue is I’ll post it here. To MelW, nope, no cloud backup.
