For the record, I didn't change my brightness to match a print.  I calibrated following the instructions when I ran the spyder 3 elite (don't remember what the steps were) and found that once I was calibrated properly, my prints from the lab were coming back spot on.

I really was only proposing at this point, that you make a couple of test prints right from the Auto Filled Raw images from Qimage.
That would take the tweak effect out of the equation and give you a hint as to how the monitor brightness is set since your problem was, Prints Too Dark!


As to how prints come out from commercial printers in stores, you cannot be sure whether they are using any auto exposure type of final software before printing.
To summarize, I only wanted you to rule out or in whether your monitor might be set to bright.
Printing from the raw image from Qimage would give you a good grasp of a determination.
That's all. No harm meant.

Fred - I appreciate your insight for sure but when I do that...what light do I view it under to know that my monitor is actually calibrated right?

I use an OTT lite which gives me good color temperature and an honest color read.
I can use a window or the Ott Lite, or outside in shade... but you will be looking at a selection of prints over a week or two to get a reasonable average of how it matches.
I was suggesting that you might see a blatant difference, and that would point out that the monitor brightness was too high. Small tweakies are all yours to average out.

I just confirmed that the profile IS meant for the export plugin so I'm not really sure where to go with that?

To be really accurate, should I be getting a ColorMunki so I can create a profile for an image printed via Qimage on specific printer with specific paper?

Profile Prism is cheaper and does a great job!  Wink  What paper is it?  The company that makes it doesn't have a profile for that paper via the regular driver?  That seems odd these days: most have ready-made profiles.

It's a pearl finish canvas from Frederix.  The company I bought it from sent me the icc profile that I'm using but at the time I wasn't aware that a different one would be needed depending on what I'm printing from so I didn't ask about it.

It doesn't depend on what you are printing from: has everything to do with what you are printing to!  I would find it hard to believe that Frederix assumed that no one would ever use the Windows driver for the ipf8300 so they only supplied a profile for a plugin that can only be used from PhotoShop.  I would suggest contacting them since this is really their issue: ask them for a profile for the standard Windows driver.  Or start here: http://www.fredrixprintcanvas.com/PrintCanvas/ICCProfiles.aspx.  I would certainly think they would support the driver that the printer ships with.
