I get the following error message when starting 14.101(yellow QI splash is behind it):

"C:\ProgramData\ddisoftware\Qimage\{Q} Last Start.jst could not be saved. Write access denied."

This is on Win 7 64bit. Don't know if it occrurred with 14.100, but hadn't seen it before then.

Programme seems to run fine after clicking "OK".

An update.

2014.102 has same fault.

I tried deleting the "{Q} Last Start.jst" and QIU merely created another upon startup.

Interestingly the "{Q} Last Start.jst " file size is always zero.

Running QIU as admin. does not produce the error message.

Below is Mike's message to you regarding the issue of trying to run Qimage from a non- administrator account.


The only other thing that can cause an issue like that is a bad installation.  Installing QU as administrator and then switching to a different (non-admin) account to run it can cause file access problems.  The fix is to elevate the privileges of the user account where it will be installed and reinstall it.

I don't understand how privileges would suddenly become an issue. Been running this way for a very long time and the update procedure was exactly as normally used.

Starting the present install as administrator avoids the error message but causes other problems with my QIU setup, which only accesses network drives. So that is not the solution.

Are you suggesting that I should now run the QIU install as admin and then always run QIU as admin?  Will this corrupt my current setup?

If you install QU as admin (or even run it once as admin) and then you switch to an account that doesn't have admin rights, there may have been files created by the admin account that cannot be deleted (or written to) by the non-admin account.  You should be able to delete the file(s) in question and when the non-admin account recreates them, they should be fine.  Did you accept the default install location for the application data?  In QU, click "Utilities", "Explore Qimage Application Data".  Where does that take you?  If it takes you to \programdata\ddisoftware\qimage, then it suggests one of two things:

(1) Your Windows privileges for \programdata are botched: everyone should be able to write to that folder (and subfolders within).

or

(2) You have anti-malware software that is interfering with writing (certain) files to that folder.

Yes, I did accept the default data location and it is the one you quoted. Upon checking the folder, it is the one that has been used by QI for years and contains all my setups and jobs etc.

As far as I know I had never installed nor run QIU as admin.

If I install and/or start QIU as admin then the error message is not displayed, however QIU no longer recognises network folders according to their assigned letters. This is critical since a lot of saved jobs depend on that letter. The assigned letters are displayed correctly in windows explorer.

It seems that of all the {Q} files it is only the {{Q} Last Start.jst} that is the problem. The others are created and have content.

In the end, QIU became corrupted (hung while creating thumbnails and wouldn't restart) and I had to restore Win 7 from a backup.

Is the "{Q} Last Start.jst" file critical to QIU operation? Could I ignore the error message and proceed as normal?

v2014.103 should correct all of the startup and shut down errors.

Turns out all of these errors are caused by running Qimage Ultimate using "Run as Administrator".  Once you do that (even once), it saves files in \programdata\ddisoftware\Qimage as administrator and those files can never be touched, renamed, or deleted after that when you run QU normally (not using "Run as Administrator") because even though everyone has read/write access to that folder, you cannot delete or modify a file created by administrators.  So in other words, when you "Run as Administrator" and then try to run normally, the saved/cached files that need to be accessed cannot be: because they have admin as the owner.

Anyway, 103 solves the problem by correcting the permissions during the install and checking them each time you run QU.  Now if anyone does that (Run as Administrator), you get an error message the next time you run QU that tells you to simply reinstall to fix it.

Windows 7 64-bit

While using only one account and default settings

if 14.100 is installed, software runs
if 14.106 is installed over 14.100, the error message regarding permissions is displayed (see attachment), software does not run
if 14.100 is installed over 14.106, software runs, no error message

This series can be repeated with consistent results. Nothing else is happening and no other software is being run between installs, no other problems are reported. 

Previously I have uninstalled the program entirely with both unwise and Windows. 100 always runs, 101 and 106 never run.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

You have damaged folders/files that cannot even be deleted with admin permission.  This is almost always the result of doing improper installs: such as installing software as administrator and then trying to run it from a different account, like a limited user account.  If you get that message and reinstalling doesn't fix it, you'll have to manually delete the \programdata\ddisoftware\Qimage folder (or rename it Qimage-old), and then install.
