I am having a number of gamut warnings of late.
I use a calibrated screen, a dedicated photo paper profile and the adobe sRGB profile. My printer is an Epson P600.
Can anybody shed any light on what’s the possible cause of the gamut warnings and how best I can deal with them?

Hi Bill,
The choice of paper is the real heavy factor as to gamut of the print.  Try a high quality Glossy like Epson Ultra glossy or similar.
Stay well,

Thanks Fred.

I use Marrutt Satin/ Oyster Semi gloss photo paper which at 265 gms I wouldn't consider a heavy paper. I have also had warnings using Epson Premium semi-gloss photopaper.

Anything other than glossy reduces the gamut the paper is capable of. I wouldn't get too concerned over it. I use the gamut display to get a general handle on things, but just let Qimage decide what intent to use (auto mode) and have at it.

He's right, but you dont have to actually own the paper. Just tell Qimage that you are using Epson glossy and see the difference.when the matching printer profile is used to judge gamu.
Dont worry about it. Just print!!!
Your question was why. The answer is the paper.  Oh I forgot. The INTENT makes a difference. I use Colorimetric.

Thanks Guys for your input. its appreciated.

A question for Fred. You mentioned colorimetric. I don't see it listed in Qimage for rendering intent!

Another complication, some images which I imported today, came into Qimage as in grayscale. I just don't understand this.

Just for the record, I downloaded the same images into Photoshop and in the print module no gamut warnings were displayed.

Since I never has these warnings in previous Qimage versions, I wonder whether I should download the 2023.103 again?

OK Bill I'll try, but you seem to be fixated on this gamut stuff.

First of all, the most accurate color print is from the Colorimetric setting. Perceptual is excellent too but  it is more flexible in that it will move some shades if the printer cant cope so it looks fine.
You need to click on the tool icon (wrench) located at the right edge of the printer profile slot. See attached images
That will produce a selection box where you can dot which you choose.  Make two prints. One set at Perceptual and the other set to Colorimetric. Use an image with some bright reds and blues.

Why Photo Shop shows nothing about gamut,  sorry, I know almost nothing about the innards of Photo Shop. Their track record has been less than admirable.
As we said, the paper and profile selection will have the main effect on the gamut.
Cannot answer gray scale imported images. You are welcome to send me a copy of one of those guys and from what  and after you did what.
Relax.... just print and make your judgement

Fred posted a screenshot showing the relative colorimetric so that's covered.  I'm a little confused on your terminology about this "warning" all of a sudden coming up.  Qimage doesn't have "gamut warnings".  You make it seem like some sort of gamut warning is interrupting your printing and making you think something is wrong.  That doesn't happen in Qimage.

Qimage has a "gamut check" but you have to go looking for it and specifically ask for it.  At that point, you are asking Qimage to check the gamut of your images to show you the areas that are out of gamut for the printer/profile/paper.

Listen to Fred.  Just print and don't go looking for trouble where there is none.  Wink  Gamut check (the Gmt checkbox in soft proofing) should be used sparingly like soft proofing itself.  It is typically used when you print and see an area of your prints, particularly bright color, that doesn't look quite right on the print.  At that point, you might check the gamut to see if that area is out of gamut and if it is, you can try reprinting with perceptual intent to see if that improves the look.

Think of soft proofing AND gamut check like a digital voltmeter.  When do you use those?  Do you stick the probes into the AC outlet to make sure the voltage is correct before plugging in your toaster?  Then again when you plug in your hair dryer?  No... because it's a diagnostic tool.  You use it when something in the normal flow of things looks wrong and you want to check for the reason.  Same with soft proofing and gamut check: you always print first and maybe use those if/when you see a problem.

Regards,
Mike

Hi Fred,
I have taken your advice and ignored the Gamut Warnings.
I have taken a jpeg image straight from camera and compared it to edits made to its corresponding Raw file and printed all three. The difference is negligible.
I shall use Gamut in future for reference purposes only.

While writing the above , i was alerted to Mike's reply. Thanks Mike for explaining the thinking behind the Gamut CHECK. I shall use it sparingly in future, if not at all and only then when I want to check how a particular edit looks.

Thanks for putting me straight on this issue.

That is what Mike was asking::::   GAMUT WARNINGS"  Qimage doesn't do warnings.
What are you seeing?

Thanks Mel and Terry.
As you might have heard, I lost my Marilyn and I am alone.
My concern is power outages, and what to eat since I lose my stove, my microwave and Toaster oven. So made a dish of chicken salad and another of egg salad.
But on the plus side, I have a good friend not far (about 20 minutes) away. (5 miles as the crow flies) He watches over me.
I am referring to our Mike.
So in case we do lose power, your orders and tech questions might be delayed a bit.
Thanks again guys.

Hello Fred

Sorry you have lost Marilyn and have joined us sorry lot in widower status.

Good to know Qimage forum is looking over you.

Hang on tight in the Hurricane, I live in the middle of a field and sometimes get 70 mph gusts, god knows what would happen if I got a hurricane blast.

Keep us posted

Regards
