Newbie I am.  I thought I resolved a paper waste problem using QI.  On a 24" roll I set up a paper size of 24x8.5 to print two 8.5x11 images.  Perfect!  My Q3100 printed as required and cut the paper appropriately at 8.5 inches.  But then my jaw dropped as it rolled out that dreaded extra 3" and cut again.  How on earth can I educate my printer not to waste valued paper?  If it is something in the printer driver, could someone familiar with the printer instruct me as to how I may shut it off.
Hoping for resolution...

Ernst on this forum is an expert on these HP printers, I hope he sees this flattery and comes on to help you.  Wink

It's encouraging to know that someone else is using the Q-series HP.  By the lack of other responses, I guess it is an HP issue.

Howard,

I do not know the Q3100 and maybe the printer likes to be called by its proper name :-) With the latest firmware installed on the Z3100 there is no 3" wasted on glossy papers. You can even avoid the first strip cutting when the paper load is done, the printer requests you to answer yes or no for that step. This has to my knowledge nothing to do with the HP driver or Qimage (that I use too) but you better use the latest driver too if you use the latest firmware.

I appreciate your information.  To my knowledge I have the latest driver installed on my HP Designjet Z3100 24" Printer.  Sorry about the "Q".  How did that happen... Shocked
I do get the option to not cut the initial lead off a roll, but I fail to find a means to prevent that last 3" cut and was particularly excited when the printer made the cut from the QI application at the conclusion of the printed image and then peeled off an extra 3" to cut again, as though it just couldn't let go without wasting more material.
As said, I'm new to QImage and that first use of the program to print the two 8.5x11 on 24" paper was also my last print.  I should mention that I'm also fairly new to my Z (aka Q) 3100 printer.  I was just holding back from further printing giving this inquiry a chance to cast more light on the situation.
I'll check back periodically in the hope that someone has a quick fix to the wasted 3" and in the meantime continue printing through QI, and learning.  Also, should I find resolution to the wasted-3 by accident, or other, I'll report here to keep it in record should someone else have the problem.

Some months ago I installed the latest firmware on the printer and the latest PCL3 driver for Vista 64 (so not the PS3 driver). Before I wrote my reply I checked whether that printer behaviour still existed on my Z3100. I loaded the HP Premium ID Gloss RC paper, used the original HP media preset for that paper and made two prints in two print runs. No 3" strip was cut in any step of the process like it used to do with that printer 4 years ago when I started using it. On the Z3200 that I also have there is no 3" strip cut either.
