This is my most recent experience using Auto Fill with a new batch of images:
On Friday I visited a garden made in an old stone quarry famous for its Azaleas and Rhododendrons. The weather was sunny with white clouds moving across the sky occasionally covering the sun. Thus there was a variety of lighting conditions including the shady areas of the garden and the bright colours of the blossom in bright sun. I took about 70 photos altogether.
What was impressive when they were loaded into Qimage Ultimate was that they looked good even before going through them in the Refine screen. The bright light on a number of them did require the use of a couple of clicks on a grid rectangle to recover highlights and these often had a shady background making a high contrast image. Auto Fill changed the fill appropriately in most of those images, or at least provided a good starting point to make fine adjustments. Similarly, when there was cloud covering the sun or in a shaded area, AF worked very well too. Overall, about 85% of the images didn’t need any manual adjustments to the fill level.
So, very quickly, I was able to produce a set of fully developed raw images, each with it’s individual adjustments, many of which were automatic. That’s not to say that’s all that was necessary for printing or web copies. Final critical refinements would be done in the Editor such as TTS, modify contrast with a curve, etc.
