Title: Mac, Crossover and the missing printer drivers ...
Post by: face on April 27, 2011, 04:41:40 AM
Hi,
i'm trying to find the best method to make qimage runs on Mac OsX.
I've installed CrossOver.
On Mac i've installed my Canon printer driver.
Unfortunately when click on printer setup from within Qimage i've really few properties and missing the most important as you can see in the attached pic.
Any help ?
Thanks

Hi Face,
I assume you are referring to the few choices of available paper?

Try turning off the Borderless mode. Many drivers do not support carious paper selections in Borderless mode.
Try that and see if that fixes it..

Hi Fred,
thanks for the reply.
Yes i'd like to properly setup paper quality (photo paper pro, gloss paper, etc), quality printer output (fine, superfine, etc), and so on as i can do under Mac OS (or on Windows OS) after installing Canon drivers.

I've tried to setup A4 (instead of A4 borderless) as you suggested but i continue to have a property dialog box with no the above options to setup.

The printer driver you are showing is not one supplied by canon, afaik. It looks as if it is a rudimentary one by default from Wine. Maybe you can install the correct canon driver for windows under crossover, maybe you can't.

Best wishes,

Ray

That's a toy train.  I don't do those.   ;D

Hi Mike,
thanks for writing (i don't read your answer  8) ).
Seriously: i can understand you've no time perhaps to develop and improve 2 different version but what about thinking to give the project to a third part developer that can help you in doing that ?
You're really so 'close' to many of us, Mac users, that are silently waiting for years for a native Mac version of your outstanding program ?

I understand.  I don't listen to the "Hi, I'm a Mac" commercials either.   8)  I've actually done all the research.  That includes more than a few meetings with a Mac programmer to get a good estimate of the time and money required to make a Mac version.  When I saw the astronomical numbers (Qimage is a BIG program), I even bought a Mac and really tried to embrace it, hoping that maybe on my "spare" time I could develop it myself.  That landed me on this article: http://ddisoftware.com/tech/articles/may-2010-some-sour-apples/

Fact is, it's just not worth the effort.  Even with all the hype and the trendiness, and Apple paying all the TV networks and movie producers to have their shows/movies display the Apple logo on the back of computers in the shot, the Mac still can't break 10% market share.  To me, that's a big problem.  A few years ago, a petition was opened to get Qimage on the Mac.  In recent years, it could only muster 235 signatures!  See http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/qimage_for_mac/signatures.  If that number had been 100x that, I might work harder to try for a Mac version.  As it stands, what it proves to me is that the Mac user base (especially the "converts" who might use Qimage) is vocal... but very small.

Add all that to the fact that you can already run Qimage on a newer model Mac... and it's really not worth it!

Mike,
i'm really grateful to take time to explain in public your opinion.
Years ago i contacted you by mail and you gave me the same today point of view.

If you really want to know how many people would be interested in a Mac OS version i think you should give the best view at that petition, contact the actual customers (probably many of them are just using it on a Mac inside a virtual machine), put the petition in your home page and so on.

You're right about the numbers but 10% is only the numbers of the WHOLE win / mac users and it's really not good for you to taste the potential Mac OS buyers.

For example:
Do you know how many film producers use windows ? I think 0% or less :)
How many photographers (pro or hobbist) use windows ? I'm sure they're NOT 90% ...

Come on, Mike, give us a real chance to have your amazing Qimage on a Mac !

Many of us seems to begin to be tired to wait for it ... :-\

PS i've to make a confidence: i'm the Author of that 4 years old petition  ::)
