I have an Epson P800 and would like to print panos without resorting to buying the roll paper attachment.

Is it possible to precut say, a 17x40" sheet from a roll, and then feed this through the Front/FineArt path?
It appears I could set the Media Size to user defined and use Fit to Page to obtain the needed sizing. A simple test of this, without actually putting any paper in, worked, in that it was willing to try and use the Front feed.

I don't have that printer either but have had 3 other Epson printers over the years.  What I have done without a problem to print panos, is to cut the length I needed from the roll, and feed it through the roll feed slot, even without the roll feed holder attached.  I cut them slightly longer than needed to be sure they could be grabbed by the rollers, but this worked quite well.  I don't know how that printer is configured of course.
