Title: Panorama with black stripes QI 2016.124
Post by: njtrout on October 06, 2015, 06:18:42 PM
Hello,

I created a panorama in Lightroom  2015.2 (latest update) and it was saved as a .dng file.  The thumbnail view looks good, but when I open the file for preview or edit i see the image broken up by black horizontal lines.

Any ideas? The image is too big to attach. The file size is 91Mb.

This is on a Windows 8.1 (64 bit) system, QI 2016.124.

Thanks,
Andy

How large is the image?
I have made a number of panos and so has Terry.
We have many many images incorporated into the pano. Never ant separations.
We use a Microsoft program called ICE. Image Composite Editor.
I have madem some with 8 shots across and three high. (24)
Terry has gone far beyond that.
Get a copy of that program and try it.

Fred,

The image is 91 mb.  I can try to scale it down in Lightroom and see if it still "stripes" with QI.  I'm working on a new PC and have to look around for ICE again as I have used it before. Figured I would try the Lightroom pan tool out.

If you feel like it, you could send it to me or Fred via wetransfer.com, a free service
Let me know and I'll send a forum message  with my email address.
You could make a screen shot of the problem and post that.
When I make pano's with ICE, I usually save as a jpeg unless it's a"special" when I would use the international standard tiff format.

If you are interested you can see some of my efforts over a few years on Photosynth.

It's great fun!

MS ICE can be downloaded here
http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/projects/ice/ (http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/projects/ice/)
It's a powerful yet easy to use program, just load the images and let it do it's stuff, completely automatic  :o
I've done up to 75 images for a 360x360 degree image

91 may be too big to email, but Qimage handle files 10x that size.

Let see if this works.  Took a screen shot from QI 2016.124

Why a .dng file? That is normally only used for raw files . I think a .tif or a maximum quality .jpg would be a better option and will probably work fine.

That was the default file format.  I'm new to Lightroom. I can try other formats and see what happens.

I created a .JPG pano wiht ICE and it opens just fine in QI.  Must be something with how QI handles large .DNG files???

I don't think it's QI, it handles my DNGs perfectly. It's more likely to be the .DNG file itself, as I said it's a raw file format and not suited to a processed file like a pano. Have you tried exporting from Lightroom as a JPG?

As Brian suggested, it'd likely work if you export as a TIFF or JPEG from Lightroom.  DNG is handled by dcraw as a raw photo format inside Qimage Ultimate.  It sounds like after the stitching process, the DNG ends up in a format that isn't compatible with dcraw.  DNG, like many raw formats, is always in a state of flux and while at least there is an open standard for DNG, there's no guarantee that one software program will be working with the same "version" of the standard as another.  I'd recommend using TIFF or JPEG as those are more established and less often changed WRT to formatting.

Mike
