Title: Pixelated preview screen
Post by: tonygamble on April 30, 2015, 06:47:28 PM
I'm using the latest version v123 on two machines.

On one the Preview Screen is pixelated. The other is pin sharp.

I have tried re-installing v123 and I even went back to a previous version v103. Still pixelation.

All I have done today that is a bit different is run the new Profile Prism to make a couple of paper profiles.

Any clues, please.

Tony

Check your Thumb quality in Edit-Preferences, it should be "Best".

Thanks Terry.

Will check tomorrow.

Bad news. Thumb quality = best is no better.

When I do Edit Page the pixelation becomes really obvious.

Shall I do a full uninstall? Presumably I won't lose anything of importance.

Anything else to try before I do?

Hi tony,
Reinstalling will not help in this type of case.
The thumbnails are built and stored in a folder called THUMBS   .......   \Qimage\Thumbs

Try View menu, REBUILD THUMBS.
If that doesn't work, I would check the thumb.JPG file size..
My 50 D shows thumb jpgs of 50 to 75K thumbs.
That is for an image size of 4170 x 3177.

See what yours says.

Thanks Fred,

I was downstairs using the machine when you replied.

I found that when I used Edit Page I also saw a highly pixelated image.

I noticed that the box on the right said Thumbs/Small Images. I altered it to Selected Image and, whoopee, the pixels cleared away.

I think the Preview Screen is clearer now. Maybe not. I don't know how much that screen is tied in with the Edit Page.

I will do the Rebuild Thumbs when I go back to the machine this afternoon.

Thanks again.

Tony

Tony,
The "thumbs/small images" uses the same thumbnail image as the preview panel in the main screen.
All you did was change to a HI resolution image.
That is not the cure.
The reason Qimage uses a Thumbnail image in the edit screen instead of a Hi Rez image is to speed up the redraw.
Supposing you has 10 images on a sheet, and made a change to one, Qimage would have to redraw them in hi resolution, thus wasting time.

Check the thumb file for JPG size and then rebuild the thumbs of a folder and see what happens

That was it, Fred.

The jpgs in the folder I had been using were less than 10k in size.

I deleted them in Explorer. I don't find that Shift F5 totally reliable - or maybe I am forgetting to use Shift as well as F5 so I can't be sure.

But all is tickety boo again.

Thanks.

Where did they come from?

I have to assume they were created by QU. I did not put them there from another program.

Human error maybe  :o  ::)
Setting Thumb quality to Low and size as Tiny at some point may have been the culprit. I believe that is the only way QU would make 10k thumbs.

Indeed Terry.

What I wondered is whether moving to the new skin could possibly have altered the two settings I found were wrong. I did the upgrade from about 103 to 123 a couple of days ago.

I refer to the low quality thumbs and that setting in the Full Page Editor that seemed to have been on Thumbs/Small Images rather than Selected Image.

The latter I did not realise existed until I was digging around yesterday so I am most unlikely to have deliberately altered it. And the thumbs made later that day were the only under 10k ones in the whole of the thumbs folder.

Mike knows where these 'settings' are stored and whether a new skin might misinterpret them. He'll probably say 'impossible' but if I don't mention it then he'll miss the chance  ::)

Hi Tony,
I wouldn't even waste a moment of Mike's time. I can roll eyes for him.
It wasn't a skin change. (Go back to the previous version with the old skin, and then reinstall 123) (Just click EDIT Prteferences and select skins and change back)
It wasn't a version change. If it was either of these, we would have 10,000 people yelling about it.

It's an accepted human foible that when someone complains that ever since he switched from regular coffee to decaffeinated,  I got a greenish hue in my prints, there will always be some "me toos".
A half dozen will come out of the woodwork attesting to the same phenomenon.
You didn't even get any "ME-TOOs"

By the way, I remember Queen Elizabeth when she was just a teen ager.
My point is, if you wont own up, then please ask Liz to keep her hand off your Qimage when she visits you.
 :D ;D :o 8) ??? ::) ::) ::) ::)

Thanks Fred,

Point accepted. I did the upgrade. I changed the Thumbs to minimum quality. I changed the Full Screen Edit to use the Thumbs and not the Selected Image.

What I need to do now is change my brand of early morning tea !! What I have been drinking makes me hyperactive and forgetful........Easy peasey!

Royal update. Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, is in labour as we speak.

Thanks for being a good sport this morning.
On a serious note, the default setting in the Page editor is small thumbs. As I said, it is for speed. If you need to see the high Resolution image, just click the HQ button.
As long as your thumbs are now of proper quality, you probably wont need Selected Image in the page editor.

So, that's probably it then, Fred.

I have probably always had Thumbs in the Page Editor and only got the problem when my thumbs dropped to lowest quality. How they got there is still a puzzle. Maybe I'll stay with the same (ginger) tea and try a different strainer.

Ah. That was the World War Two message pigeon we just saw flying in. Guessed it was from a loyal veteran from afar.

Thank you from us all.
