Title: Print to file with paper size equal to print size
Post by: GlossyBlacky on October 17, 2012, 06:32:52 AM
First of all congratulations to the new version of Qimage 2013!

I have a workflow inquiry to print to the file - correct approach.
I print at a service provider on Epson printer (Epson 9800).
I prepare the images in Photoshop and edit them on the desired sizes, these may vary (A4, A3, 22, 3 x 32, 7 cm, 18x36cm, 18x68cm...).
Resolution is constant at 360 dpi.
The images are not but trimmed to a paper size to the desired final size for printing.
I will sharpen images with Qimage. (Print to file)
Unfortunately, Qimage placed the images on a page. Since the page size is not match  the image sizes, Qimage adds the page surface to the image.
And save then the file with the paper surface and the paper size.
This is somewhat unwanted.
I can me currently help: I do exactly as the image sizes for each image the same paper sizes.
This is very  inexpedient  for various, different image sizes.

Is there a solution for this?
I wish QImage would have a function: "Make paper sizes equal to the image sizes! (constant print resolution 360 dpi).
Or: save the (Print) file without the paper surface.
Or: add no paper surface and paper size to the image.
Or: in Special sizes - Use Original /embedded size plus  "Auto cropping the paper size equal to the print size "

You set the page size in the Print to File Dialogue, see screen shot attached. There is also a button there to match the printer settings.
Your work flow seems really strange  ::) ie.

Why not use the editor for image sharpening?
It's not clear whether you are making paper prints as the end result or making a file for someone else to print?
If the former, why not make life easy and use QU in "normal mode" and specify the size (mm or ins) within Qimage and let Qimage deal with the resolution and interpolation.
I'm sorry to say that you PS users don't seem to get it on how Qimage works and go through hoops with a complex work flow instead of using Qimage as it was designed.  :o  ;)

Hi Wolfgang.
Please clarify the above, and then I am certain we have the solution.

Specifically what size paper are you using, and specifically what size prints are you ordering?

In other words, if you use A3 paper, what size print do you wish to have on it?
Or... are you saying that the print you are making on a 9600 Epson is on a roll of paper and you want the print to be A3 size, or  11.7 inches x 16.5 inches, which is the dimension of A3 on the US.

Terry does the metric calculations, but either way we need to know your need.

In case 2) you would tell Qimage to make a print FIT TO PAGE after setting the page size to A3 as Terry showed in his previous post. Then Print!
In case 1) You Set the page size to the print size you want, and after making the page size in Print to File, again, Fit To Page. Print

Lat us know...
Please.

Sorry for my unclear description.

1. My printing service providers prints on roll paper.
2. I will provide him with sharpened images
3. These images without boundary and in final print size to 360 dpi.
4. I print to home with an Epson 2400 and with Qimage Ultimate
5. I find the sharpening with QImage best.
6. I thought the if I (must!) give the pictures to the printing services,
the best is to sharpen these images with the best sharpen algorithm: Qqimage Ultimate.
7. So that I get very good sharp images similar with my home printer Epson 2400

Is it wrong? Or cumbersome?
I wish the best sharpness for my prints, even if I have to give it to the print service provider!

Hi Wolfgang,
First, there is a section in Help, Learn by Example 25a. You can read it on-line here:
http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage-u/help/lbe.htm#25a (http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage-u/help/lbe.htm#25a)
Print to File's basic use is for preparing images to send to a printing service
That says that Smart print Sharpening can be used with Print to File and I would think that is the right thing to do.

Perhaps a forum member who does this regularly would comment on what they do.

Hi Terry, thanks for the answer

I have read this Learn by Example 25a
Because the files for printing on roll paper are intended, this is not the best solution.
The service provider takes the images in original size (print size) on the roll paper optimally to arrange them.
He has unfortunately not QImage - he uses a RIP.

I think a solution would be if in the ImageEditor under the save menu item:
"Save filtered images" would be an add-on: Add before saving the (pre-) selected print sharpening.
Similar to Print To File, only just on the image involved - without paper surface.

I hope this is understandable, my english is bad.

If you make the page size the same as the print size reqired you will not get any "paper surface" showing.
Print to file enables prints from a print lab to have the benefits of Qimage printing. Supplying a basic image means there'll be no proper interpolation or smart print sharpening.
Terry

PS if you want a clean Print (no extra anything) to file use the WEB COPY option in the Print to file option. Set the size, and then add your image as size; Fit to Page.

Yes that is clear:

I have, however, different, changing image dimensions (not compliant to paper dimensions or other dimensions standards).
That in a job.
So, I must set the paper size to the image dimensions for each image. This is the additional effort that I would like to avoid.
That is my wish:
Anywhere in QImage a function For "Print to file" - " "fit paper to print size", opposed to fit image to paper size.

Is maybe a rare request. OK, is not so bad, if QImage can not everything.
For me, it's still a super program.

Thanks Wolfgang
