Hi
Have been using this great application as a registered purchaser for many years without issue, however today out of the blue production in the studio was halted due to a persistent error causing Qimage to crash. I'm hoping someone can throw up a solution, please!

It occurred quite randomly during a routine session of setting up a few images on a page, nothing extraordinary was done that I'm aware of. The error message seen on screen is: Exception EInOutError in module Qimage.exe at 0028AACA

and Windows reported the following:

I'm not a programmer, these messages are meaningless to me.

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling without success. The error occurs each time any attempt is made to open Qimage and so at the moment our production workstation is currently shutdown until we can resolve it  Sad

System info:
OS: Win 7 Pro
Qimage 2020.121

Any advice or suggestions appreciated.

In my experience, 0eedfade errors that happen in the kernel are caused by an internal printer driver crash.  Since this could be caused by Qimage trying to restore corrupted printer settings, first try opening QU while holding the shift key.  Continue holding the shift key until QU opens.  If it still crashes, try uninstalling and reinstalling your printer driver for the printer you are using and let's go from there.

Hi Mike, thanks for the response.

Still no success I'm afraid, I've done the following:
1) tried opening QU whilst holding shift key, same error pops up.
2) uninstalled drivers for all the printers on the network - Epson 9900, 9600 and a general purpose office printer (Epson Workforce 3640).
3) re-installed 9600 and re-booted PC, tried opening QU with/without shift key - same problem occurs.
4) re-installed 9900 and re-booted PC, tried opening QU with/without shift key - same problem occurs.

When you start it normally without holding the shift key, do you get a message that Qimage was not shut down properly along with a diagnostic code?  If so, what does it say?

The only thing it is doing in that section is trying to open the folder where thumbnails get displayed.  EInOutError tells us that it is a problem with reading a file (or folder).  The 0eedfade tells us that the crash occurred inside Windows itself where Qimage asked Windows to retrieve a file or folder and Windows crashed doing so.  If it also does it when you hold the shift key, that tells me Windows is having trouble reading from your drive.  It could be a permissions problem, an anti-virus software interfering, bad spot on the hard drive, or any number of things.  To rule out the simplest (permissions) try right clicking on the QU program icon and open with "Run as Administrator".  See if that does anything.  Also try temporarily disabling your anti-virus and/or anti-malware software to see if that gives relief.

Thanks Mike, I tried both those suggestions - run as administrator and switched off the anti-virus app - but without success.

However we have resolved it by backing up the QU installation folder (C:\ProgramData\ddisoftware\Qimage) to another location and then uninstalling/reinstalling QU so that we have a clean, fresh installation. It then opened without any issue and we are back into production again.

I just then copied over the files for some custom printer settings. Obviously we have not identified the specific problem but as the PC in question is getting quite aged now it's probably time to start thinking about upgrading, or at least replacing the HDD.
