I have used QI for many years but only to print, which it does superbly, but struggle with the interface at times.

So, this may be a bit basic but, how do you simply convert a raw to a jpg or tiff in QIU and end up with the jpg as if I had exported from Lightroom?  I can print to file but the photo is then placed on paper and if the paper size is not exactly the same aspect ratio as the cropped photo I end up with a jpg file that has white borders.

Ian,
It's all in getting used to something by using it more often.
You wish to make a jpg from a RAW. There are many ways, but the easiest for me is to simply place the Raw in the queue, right click on the image. (Right clicks always give a menu)
Select Convert Image.
See my screen snap. This will create a top quality JPG.
I am not sure if you have cropped the image, so for the moment, turn auto crop off, or uncheck the box in the Convert image dialogue box that says Honor Crops.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Fred and you are correct about using the program more will help.  I just was stuck at the beginning Smiley  I was looking in the menu bar for a convert to jpg, or export command.  Right clicking on the thumbnail did not show the convert command but putting the file in the print queue worked fine.

One anomaly that I would like some one to confirm is that the converted jpg could not be viewed in FastStone my usual photo viewer program.  It simply showed as a completely black image although file size and EXIF info could be read???

Gee, FastStone is usually pretty good.
Is that happening to any JPG you made or only that one?
Did you embed some weird color profile into the JPG that perhaps Faststone doesn't read?

Can you email the jpg to me?    wathree.ssz@verizon.net

I love mysteries!

Fred,

Thanks.  I have been trying to figure out how to convert the RAW files to another format in batch.
I assume that QIU is using DCRaw.
The sharpening and conversion worked like a charm.

Since I already had  TIFF files from the original conversion, this time I converted to JPG.

Ian,
The JPGs showed up properly in FastStone--each and every one of them.  Sometimes I have gotten the black image.  I think that I went in PS Elements and resaved it.

Thanks again,

Conversion of Raw

I have been converting RAW files at the time of download and they automatically went in the Developed subfolder.  I noticed that EXIF data was not carried forward.

However, by doing the conversion from inside QIU the EXIF data is carried forward in either TIFF or JPG format.

I had been puzzled because Mike had stated that the EXIF data would stay attached.

best,

Well,
I don't know.   I actually went and shot three flash pictures in the spare bedroom, and one no flash.
I placed my CF card in the card reader, opened Qimage Ultimage which contains Flashpipe.
I set the check to DEVELOP RAW PHOTOS after they are copied, and make JPGS. Place the JPGS in a folder named DEVELOPED.

I also checked the box for make Down sized/ Web size copies (1024 x 768) and put them in a folder called WEB.

See screen snap.
I clicked GO and Qimage Ultimate made JPGs at full resolution; another set of JPGS at 1024 x 768; and of course, developed the RAW images too.

In every case the EXIF was carried forward to the new JPGS.

All I can say is, try it again, and or, try it with a different camera.

Fred,

I tried to send this yesterday several times with screen shots attached.  Every try even with just one screen shot failed.  So, I'm going to send the message and then in separate messages the screen shots.

Fred,

I went back and checked your settings and compared them to mine for conversion from RAW to JPG.  The differences have to do with folder filing of images.

When I insert the memory card  into the computer I get Flashpipe v2010.118.

I started a fresh or new download of RAW and then have them converted into JPG.

I opened some JPG in FastStone.  There was no EXIF data.
I then opened a JPG in PS Elements 7 and checked under File Info.  There was no EXIF data.

I opened the file in QIU, placed the mouse pointer on a JPG image.  There was no EXIF data in the bottom line.  The only things that appeared were filename, etc.

I then opened a file in QIU that had been converted using QIU and saved by using the Enhancement/Filter Application and checking the appropriate buttons.  This time in the bottom line I got filename, etc., plus ISO, f stop, speed, and focal length.

Below are three screen shots
1)   Flashpipe settings
2)   Flashpipe download and conversion using download using QIU to see if there was the EXIF data, but none was there
3)   Using QIU after download to convert to see if there was EXIF data—voila, it was there.

Screen Shot with EXIF data.  This was accomplished by processing the RAW images in QIU and saving to JPG:

Mystery is solved!

Qimage Ultimage has the code in it that copies and carries EXIF from Raw to JPG and TIF
The Flash Card Copy Move routine (Ultimate's version of Flash Pipe)  (Under FILE, third button from the left) also uses that code to copy EXIF.
So there is no problem anywhere in sight!

Fred,

Thanks.  I have partial success.

Of the three ways to download RAW files with EXIF files intact the only one that was successful was the Flash Card copy/move button that is located in the row below File Edit . . . Help.  However, it worked only when the RAW files were developed and saved as JPGs.

I could not replicated this for TIFF format.  I got TIFF files, but without the EXIF data.

I have been on this for some time and I even reloaded QIU.

I wish I could get the TIFF files like you did because DCRAW is an excellent developer.

best,

Vlady,
I don't know what you need the Tifs for, but try this,
Put a couple of Raw images into the queue. Right click on the preview panel and select Convert Image.
Set the box to create TIF and click OK.
Tell me if you have the EXIF info.

Fred,

Yes, this coversion with DCRAW develop processing works.

The reason I want TIFF files is that I do post-processing and you can open and re-saving a TIFF without worrying about degradation of image, i.e., pixels.  With JPG there should be a minimum of opening and re-saving.

Thanks for your help with the Flashpipe problems.  I hope that Mike can fix it that all the options work the same way--when he has time.
