It's the first time since I moved to QU for converting my RAWs that I needed to revisit files from my (version one) Canon 1Ds.

Unless I am reading Mike's list of supported camera/files incorrectly I reckon QU should open the file. All it seems to do is access the embedded jpg.

I have taken the liberty of sending Fred and Terry a couple of files to look at.

If anyone has a clue as to what I am doing wrong then I'd be pleased to hear from them.

Thank you for sending the files.
They are *not* Raw files, but Tifs,  which are just like uncompressed JPGS.

The resolution is 192 x 288 . I have a feeling that I remember that early Canon models made a thumbnail image along with the RAW for viewing in the back of the camera.

Have another look!

How odd.

BreezeBrowser registers them as RAW's.

I'll look at some more files from that camera.

It will report them as raw's, but unlikely to display (ie. convert) the raw's. It's using the embedded thumbnail and (half size) jpeg.

Can you find the raw files, the actual raw files?   I don't really care much what tricks Irfanview or Breeze Browser use to simulate a RAW display.
You sent me exactly what I said: tiny tifs which were linked to the Raw files in the camera to show in the view screen in the camera.

I'll rewrite as I see you have just  posted a message.

The files I sent you were 9,982 kb and 9,103 kb when they left here. Are they what you call tiny tifs?

According to DPR the RAW file for the original 1Ds was about 8.8 mb. Is that not the same thing as my 9,000 kbs?

If I open my file with BreezeBrowser the RAW flag comes up and if I ask it to save a 16bit TIF it produces a file of 64,477 kb

If I do the same in Lightroom 4 it produces a TIF of 64,416 kb.

Maybe they are both playing tricks in amplifying the files eightfold.

Yes, if I call up the files I sent you in Picture Window Pro I can only see the small embedded jpg - but PWP was pretty late into the RAW converting game.

My tiny Tifs come from the resolution that I see.
But you are right. The filesize is too big for the image size. Must be something else inside.
Let me play with it.

I think I've got it!
By George, I've got it!
"The rain in Spain stays........?

Rename the TIF to a CRW, and now it opens as a RAW file!

I don't understand why, but it apparently has a RAW inside a thumbnail outside shell.
Will have to ask Mike, unless someone else knows.

Just back from a walk in the rain  Roll Eyes I was thinking as I walked, change the file extension - I'm sure this has cropped up in the past.
I've looked at the Exif data in Exiftool GUI and the that gives the low resolution and the correct resolution with a file type as TIF. Perhaps the data has been corrupted.

Thanks Fred and Terry,

Making the extension different does the trick - for QU.

BB hates it of course - but Mr B will have live with that curse.

Tony

I asked M.C. quickly as he was busy with family stuff.
Basically the answer was that some software was used that inappropriately messed with the raw file, renaming them. Might even have been some old Canon software.
That was it.
Behave.... I saw those girls in front of those cars...(you devil!)

Thinking about those files in my sub-concious (aka sleep) I seem to remember that the version 1 1Ds did call its RAWs TIF.

I remember being confused by the fact that one opened them and saved them either to jpg or another type of 'tif'.

I suspect Canon realised it was not the cleverest way of designating the RAW files and changed them to CRW for the version 2.

I could look it up in a Wiki but it's not important as we now know the fix for QU.

Have a good Sunday. Mine is photographing Calendar Girls! Should be fun.

Rawer than even I expected, Jeff.

The web folder is embargoed subject to inspection by the ladies of the Women's Institute. Upon clearance by them I will link it to my web site and let Google do its damnest.

Tony,
You do see that taking "Go" away from Google, leaves "Ogle"
