At the moment I am using the "flash card copy/move" utility to reduce image size (from 3648 x 2432 to 1152 x 768). Is this as good a way of doing it as any, or is there another technique that will provide a better quality result?

All methods of downsizing in Qimage use the options on the "Edit", "Preferences", "Printing Options" dialog where you find the settings for interpolation and downsampling, so they'll all produce the same results.  That's as good a method as any.

So if I don't care about down sampling times, it's OK to move the antialias from the default to to High? Also, I notice that if you reduce size from the print queue, you get an option for jpeg save quality. Is this available in Preferences (I couldn't see it)? If not, will the Flash card copy routine pick up the last used setting (100 in my case)?

The anti-alias slide is not just speed, but a balance between sharpness and possible artifacts.
Normally, photo images will look best at default. Try and make a JPG using max antialias and min. See what you see.
I use the low setting as I like to maintain the sharpness of my images when I email.
If I have some design pattern that I shot, a stained glass window, or something with a propensity to create artifacts, and you see any, then you resave your downsize using a medium or higher setting.

The compression of the JPG can be adjusted on all 4 screens.
There are two email/web size copy screens each of which has a place to set the compression vs the quality.
The other screens are CONVERT IMAGE. That has a place to set your jpg compression too.There's a SAVE AS screen in the Image Editor
Again: Compromise: Large file size, no quality loss, smaller file size, possible reduction in quality.

Hope this gives you a better feel.

Oh another way to explain the system is to compare Hybrid against Hybrid SE interpolators.
The SE is artifact free, and a tad softer than the HYBRID
... and yes, Flash Card copy move will follow your settings in Qimage.

That's very helpful Fred. I see what you mean. Sadly, I know very little about this sort of thing but I have an advisor who knows a great deal! So I will become more knowledgeable bit by bit. Many thanks
