Does Soft Proofing require the printer to be turned on? I am getting a message to select a printer when I select Soft Proof. The printer selected is correct but no turned on. Do I need to turn it on to see the soft proof?

Thanks,
Andy

I suspect the message you are getting is to select a printer profile, not a printer.  The soft proof cannot work unless you select a printer profile under Printers and Settings.  It needs that profile to know how the printer responds to color.

Mike, I have a profile selected for a Epson 1430 printer. The printer is not turned on.  I have "Let printer driver manage color" set.

(Trying to insert a screen shot but not able to figure out how)

You don't have a profile selected in Qimage.  As I pointed out, you have to select a printer profile on the Printers and Settings tab.  Qimage doesn't know what profile the driver is using so you need to allow Qimage to manage color and select the profile in Qimage: drop down where it says "Let printer/driver manage color" and select your profile there.  Otherwise you've denied Qimage the ability to see/use the profile and have deferred that to the driver.
