v2014.100    07/26/13

Priority: High

v2014.100 includes the following:

Welcome to 2014 (Overview)

Qimage Ultimate 2014 comes with some major improvements and new pricing for 2014.  UI improvements reduce eyestrain while making controls more readable, and new image databasing tools allow you to add user descriptions to any folder, album, or photo, with the ability to search those descriptions to locate important photos and events.  Entering user descriptions couldn't be easier: just browse to a folder and your thumbnails are displayed automatically.  If you would like to enter a description for that folder, simply type the description under the folder name on the main window.  It's as simple as that!  Want to enter a description for individual photos?  Click the small "i" button on any thumbnail and enter your description.  The "i" turns blue, letting you know a description exists for that thumbnail.  Hold your mouse over any blue "i" indicator on any thumbnail to see the description, or click to change.

These non-invasive tools allow you to enter data and search your existing photo folders without being forced to fumble with clumsy "collections".  If you already have your photos stored in sensible folders by event, date, subject, etc. and you don't need the new data tools: simply access your existing folder structure immediately.  If you'd like to supplement your existing photos (or locations) with user descriptions, just enter them as you go.  No clumsy data workflows required: no "importing" or "syncing" necessary and no new hoops to jump through just because you want to be able to enter and search descriptions!

Oh, and the 2014 pricing?  With all these improvements, you'd think we increased the price.  But we didn't!  Regular price is now $74.99 with $5 off for trying the demo, so you can get Qimage Ultimate for $69.99 by ordering from the trial!

Details...

UI Improvements, Raw Photo Update, and New Tools

  • Major UI improvements: New Darkroom 2014 skin offers a more modern look, easier to read fonts, and improved controls.
  • Major raw photo upgrade: Many new cameras supported (too many to list) plus improvements in processing speed.
  • New album tool: When viewing an album, click the "Display folders" button above the thumbs to see photo locations!
  • Back button: New back button next to folder history allows you to go back to the previous folder/album.

Image Databasing

  • Image databasing: Very easy to use UI allows you to add user descriptions to your albums, folders and individual images!
  • Flash card copy/move: Add a description from the get-go when you load new photos from a flash card.
  • Folders/albums: When you browse to a new folder or album, simply type your description for that folder/album on the main window.
  • Images: Click the small "i" button on any thumbnail to add a description, then hover over any blue "i" to see the description.
  • Search tools: Click the search button (binoculars) above the thumbnails to search folder, album, image descriptions.
  • Non-invasive user data: Enter a description for any existing folder, album, or photo: no need to redo your library with "collections"!

New darker color scheme is great!  Much easier to see smaller color variations that need to be corrected.  Smiley

That bug of stalling in the right pane seems to be fixed too and it hasn't stalled nor stopped responding ... yet.  Smiley

Aside, one item I noted was when I had a B&W in the Editor and selected SmartColor as I set a small value to correct for paper coloration, all values went from 0.0 to 2.95 (Huh?) and no color shift was seen in the B&W.  Huh?  I had initially set a value of 0.98 Magenta and 1.03 Blue to the N(eutral) values to simulated a cooler selenium paper tone.  The N values were also set to zero by the SmartColor addition and I lost the selenium look.  I use the N channel for color-tuning to get rid of what appears as a greenish bromide paper look that looks yucky on portraits.

However, under "Delete Associative Filters" there isn't a selection to delete the "SmartColor" Filter alone, or at least one that will reset it and leave my fine-tuning color values alone too.

If I have a RGB value changed in some of the Editor's color blocks, it clears out SmartColor as well as the Alteration I made too (e.g. Like adding 0.98 Magenta/1.03 Blue in the N color that I had selected in addition to SmartColor above.).  Luckily I remembered the initial values I had used to get the toned effect once they all had set to zero.  I was sort of surprised it erased the initial values in N on applying the SmartColor (or why it jumped so high from 0.0 to 2.95 on a B&W even though I applied a slight print coloration, but it seemed to make zero difference for that large a number change other than deleting my small set values which when applied again makes the selenium tone even thought it is showing 2.95 everywhere else.).

Oh well.  Back to changing out another 6 ink tanks, so that means one blank full color page to get the ink flowing, and another 2-5 pages for profiling as the color will shift in the magenta/blue/yellow someplace as usual.  That makes 19 ink tanks in one week!  Bloody ink sucker (Canon 9000 II with the tiny 12-13ml tanks.).

I agree but I'm not sure colour variations are necessarily easier to see. However the whole interface is much clearer and the text easier to read. I like it a lot  Cool

The database feature is really neat too. I woke up to the update email and had a quick go categorising some folders and images and trying a few searches. It's good too that you can enter folder descriptions as you download from a flash card - especially, if like me, you copy to more than one hard drive; all the drives are then listed when a search is done.
I can think of some other database features I would like to see but will wait to get used to the current options before commenting, except to say it's sooo simple to use!  Grin

Black & White  is neutral and Smart Color Boost does not change neutral - you can see that in the dialogue with the tick boxes.
If you use the dropper it tells you what is neutral by underlining the "N"
If you want to change a neutral colour balance, you must edit the Neutral Row in the table.

However, under "Delete Associative Filters" there isn't a selection to delete the "SmartColor" Filter alone,
Smart Color Boost is a "Selective Color" edit so you have to select that filter or modify the Sel Col table individually.

For me, let's back that truck up! (Quoting from Tim, the Toolman Taylor)
Data base? Who needs it?
I name my folders when I upload from my flashcard.

I think I felt the same way when my neighbor bought a car with Power steering. "You have to know how to drive and you don't have trouble turning the wheel when parking or a U-turn"

There are about a half dozen really nice photo places near Sarasota, Fl that I enjoy... Emerson Point, Waterfront park at the Marina, Under the Causeway Bridge, The South Jetty in Venice, Anna Maria Pier, Venice Pier, and Jungle Gardens.
What happened over the years to the master plan?
I looked and found I had named all my folders.... South Jetty 04-05-2009;    South Jetty  06-22-2009; Jungle Gardens 03-01-2003;  and so on and so on and so on...
After so many years,  I can't find anything.  The attached was shot 5 and a half years ago at the Jungle Gardens. How can I find that when someone asks for a print?
Holy Moley! Now all I do is tag the folder with something noteworthy and especially the image. I tagged that BIRD.
Now all I do is a search for "BIRD" and I might get 2 dozen that I thought were noteworthy bird shots, but it will be located and placed in an album folder for me.

Now I love Power Steering and I love this data base.

NEVER MIND the comment below.  It did take about 20 minutes though.  The new skin is up and looks great and all the new description tools are as easy and intuitive as advertised.  As for the comment below, perhaps I missed a warning message or something as I busily clicked yes, yes yes, finish. Thanks again

I just installed.  But when I run QU, it gives me a message One Time Data Migration in Progress Please Wait.  And then it is churning - for over 20 minutes now.  What is going on?  I checked when I installed - no new folder locations or anything.  Is this copying something related to the new info features? Thanks Mel W.

Hi Mel,
Asked Mike about that yesterday morning.
QU was looking for RATINGS. If you did a bunch of ratings, or if you had a lot of folders or subs to check, it was looking for that. Apparently, it will carry ratings in the new data base along with all the tags we add.

Oh, I forgot to mention; it also checks your computer for Porn...  Smiley Wink Cheesy

Version 101 doesn't do the check on startup: you do it manually (if you want) under "Utilities".  That way no one gets stuck booting and they can choose when to do it.  That said, no matter how many files you have, it shouldn't take more than 2 or 3 minutes and that's if you have maybe a hundred thousand image files thumbnailed from an old version.  So I don't know what took it so long.
