Print ratio question ..

I've used Qimage for a number of years, and have a new challenge. (Running 2016.158 right now)

I'm cropping photos for an art montage, not framing. For this project, I don't care about the startard print rations of 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, etc. I care about the ratio of the print as cropped, and don't want to auto crop any more. I'm not concerned about the size in all cases, but would like to be able to scale that on the print page with the mouse using freehand layout.

From what I can tell, the only way to do this is manually create a custom size for each photo that will match that photo's special aspect ratio. That'll pretty much rule out QImage as my layout tool of choice for this project.

Any better ideas?

Marc,
If I am reading your question right, you want to be able to do a freehand crop on a per image basis.
In other words, by artistic eye.
If that is the object, I do that all the time.

Simply turn off the auto print crop scissors, and place the image in the queue, and open the editor.
Use the mouse and draw the crop as you wish with no aspect restrictions.

Also can be done in the editor screen by unchecking the CROP LOCK box.
If you are looking to drag print size corners to fit a part of a page, you can do that in the Page Editor screen.

If I read the question wrong, please give me more information.

Marc,
There are at lease 2 other ways to do what you require.
1. Make a re-usable image filter crop with the aspect ratio required. Open the image editor for any image that does not have a filter. Specify the aspect ratio and click Crop Lock. Then drag the crop on the image. Now, save the Filter Parameters to file with a suitable name. You can apply the filter to any image from within the editor, right click on a thumb or right click on the image on the Page Preview. Add images to the queue with auto crop off. You can now drag the image to size in the Page Editor.
2. Create some print sizes with the desired aspect ratios, save and name them. Any size will do but I suggest something close to the smallest size you are likely to require. With auto- crop on, add image(s) to the queue and adjust the size in the page editor by dragging a corner.

I hope that helps, QU can do most things related to print size & layout, often in more ways than one. Cool

PS. if you free-hand drag in the editor ike Fred suggests, you get a read-out of the aspect ratio as you drag - neat!

I do this a lot - full pages montages containing anywhere from 5 to say 20 pictures - of all different sizes but generally no blank space, or a uniform .025 inch space around each one. I do it in the page editor by tossing a dozen or so prints of different sizes and apect ratios in to the queue. In the page editor, I move prints around and resize by hand by grabbing a corner and making larger or smaller. As the page fills, I will usually have to resize one or two pictures/aspect ratios to tuck the last one or two in where I want them. (Right click and say new size). I also sometimes will lay the edge of one print over another (send to back or bring to front) to get that last picture to fit.
