v2017.107   Nov 3, 2016

Priority: Low

v2017.107 offers smoother gradients when printing 16 bit images (even with 8 bit drivers) and checkboxes to sort media type and size.

Mike,

Again thank you for bringing back the paper size sort choices.

There is something I do not understand, if I click on the 'Reset Current printer to defaults' button the color management setting in Settings changes to Let printer/driver manage color. That setting is not what I configured as the default in my printer drivers, Z3200 PCL3 and PS3. Is this on purpose and for what reason then or something odd related to the HP drivers?

Met vriendelijke groet, Ernst

Mike,

Something else. If I select another media in Settings and stay on the main Settings window + use the scroll wheel on the mouse (nervous I guess) the media can still change to an undesired choice. Leaving the main Settings window over the thumbnail window section fixes the choice, going to the files list doesn't and the scroll wheel still changes the media.  The same for other choices there including different printers that may differ in one character only so the fault goes unnoticed.

Installed the Z3200 PS3 driver now as that one allows Remove White space at the bottom etc and apart from an odd paper size appearing in the Settings it works, also on job recalls from the log file. Have to get used to that driver but it solves my window hopping issue.

Met vriendelijke groet, Ernst

Ernst,

Resetting printer settings resets both the driver and the QU default for profile which is "Let printer/driver manage color".  QU has no way to know what selections you've made for color management inside the driver (which is why you get the instructions and have to do that manually).  So it just sets the printer profile back to the default "Let printer/driver manage color" and restores the printer's printing preferences to whatever is set in Control Panel.  You have to do the rest from there.

I'm not sure I understand what you are seeing with the mouse wheel.  I can select a media type and if I keep my mouse over the media type entry and move the scroll wheel, the media type changes: just standard behavior for a dropdown.  As soon as I move the mouse out of that dropdown box, however, the scroll wheel no longer changes the value.  If I change media type and then just move the mouse out of the dropdown box (over "dead space" on the Settings tab), it won't change with the mouse wheel.

I am not likely to use that driver default button so less a problem here. It is a Catch 22 situation and I see that you have gone for the least destructive way if the user forgets to set the media profile back in Settings, OFF could have been another decision. Assuming the user has Printer/Driver color management as the default in the driver, in that case most drivers expect sRGB assigned in the image, some have a choice between several color spaces. I have set Application Color Management in the driver default as the HP OEM default is Printer/Driver CM which creates more issues in practice for me.

On Windows 7 here and that wheel stays active all over the place, Windows Icon bar, Windows Start included, it only is deactivated if the cursor goes into the thumbnail section or when I click into another dropdown window on Settings. Outside of Settings I can go into QU Preferences, scroll there, set Imperial Units instead of Metric, get out again and still scroll the paper sizes. at any place but in the thumbnails section.

Met vriendelijke groet, Ernst

Interesting.  I'm not able to reproduce that scrolling behavior at all so I wonder if we're talking about the same thing.  I drop down media type, select a media that I want, and as soon as the mouse moves out of the dropdown for media type, the media type no longer changes with the mouse wheel.  In fact, the mouse wheel will have no effect on the media type at all unless my mouse pointer is directly over the media type dropdown when I scroll the wheel.  I wonder if you could have some windows add-on that affects that?

As you mentioned, Application Managed Color (equivalent to "Host ICM" in other brands) is the proper selection in the HP driver when using "Let printer/driver manage color" in QU.  That allows QU to send the profile along with the image and not assume a color space like sRGB or Adobe.  The instructions that appear with Epson, Canon, and HP drivers when you click the Properties button now instruct you on how to make the setting that works that way.  QU uses it's built in printer RGB (pRGB) color space which is a bit larger than Adobe RGB: big enough to hold the full gamut of almost any printer without being too large (like ProPhoto).

Mike,

The same behavior on my Vista back up system. Both systems have a Logitech gaming mouse, for the higher resolution. Nothing special done in the Windows settings, plain Windows installs. Mouse drivers not touched either. A way older QU 2015 version on the back up system actually behaved similar but going over the live view or thumbnail section switches the dropdown choices off so that went unnoticed as the settings area is more surrounded. Maybe someone more enlightened will tell me what is wrong with my installs, I do not see that behavior with other applications.

My optimal color management settings should be, in the driver; Application Color Management, in QU; the ICC paper profile created for the paper on the printer. 90% of the paper profiles are made with the spectrometer integrated in the Z3200-PS, so custom made.

If for an odd reason I select Printer Driver Color Management in the driver I make sure in the driver that it expects the color space assigned to the image I load for printing. Either sRGB or Adobe RGB in the PCL3 driver, no more color spaces.

In the PS3 driver Colormatch and AppleRGB are extra color spaces for RGBdevice color management, next to sRGB and AdobeRGB. Several CMYK color spaces are also covered in the PS3 driver's CM. In fact I use that route only when I print PDFs from Adobe Acrobat and then only to HP OEM papers.

Hello Mike.

Does the "smoother gradients when printing 16 bit images" improvment mean that one should regenerate the Prism-made printing profiles?

Regards

Peter

No.  You'd get the same profile as before because the printed targets only have ~9000 patches (colors) in 8 bit/channel values and you don't use a profile when printing the target.  The smoother gradients only come into play when you have 16 bit/channel images that have colors that fall between the 16.8 million values/colors defined by 8 bits/channel or you are printing an image that is in a very large color space such as ProPhoto.
