Author Topic: Converting Panasonic RW2 Images to TIF  (Read 13183 times)

I would appreciate help with a problem I have encountered when Converting (and Save Filtered Image) any RW2 images from my Panasonic DMC-LF1 pocket camera to TIF - currently using QU 2018.107, in that the resulting TIF loses the camera make, model and lens details in the EXIF information.  The problem does not occur when converting the same images to JPGs. This causes problems when I need to open the file for barrel distortion correction in PTLens (as there is currently no lens profile available in QU).  Although I seldom need to do this, I know that the problem did not occur in earlier versions (I checked some TIFs converted in 2016.124, which were fine).

Have I missed a setting somewhere or is this a bug?

Many thanks,

Glenn

Hi Glenn,
Yes, you are correct, exif disappeared from images converted to tif somewhere between V2017-121 (April 2016) and v2018-101 (June 2017).
I've checked the tif the few tif images I have and can see the change. I vaguely remember noticing this a while ago but then forgot about it.
I use PT lens too and have been entering the lens data manually!
I'll see this gets to Mike.

Hi Glenn,
I am running version 108, although shoud  not be different,
I have a couple of RW2 images from a Panasonic GH-1.
EXIF is passed on to the TIF. See screen snaps.
Your camera might be different???
If you would like to send me an RW2 image, I would be happy to check it, and if not working, pass it on to Mike who will see what goes.
My email is wathree.ssz@verizon.net  I can accept under 30 MB emails. If bigger than that, use WE TRANSFER, a free file transfer service.

Hi Glenn,
I've done some more checks with QU 2018-108 and most of the exif data is there. Camera make & model seem to be missing. I checked RW2 and Canon CR2 raw files.
I am aware that exif data for tifs is likely to be more difficult to transfer. Jpegs seem to be fine.
You could try copying the data using an exif reader like Exif Pilot or ExifToolGUI

I have now checked with PT Lens and all works fine with it detecting my Canon camera, lens and focal length.
I set the PT lens Options as attached screen shot.
It does not seem to work at all with a RW2 image converted to tif or a JPEG, I cannot even set the values manually, maybe I need to update PTLens.

Did some more checking here too.
I have two Canon cameras, a 20D and a 50D. I have 4 lenses that I might use on them. a 70-300, a 28-135, 17-40mm, and a prime 50mm.
No combination of camera and lens will show the lens in the exif for the images.
So I never expect to see the lens. It does show the focal length on the right side for the shot.
Why?  All I can say is that the EXIF reader shows the Lens type missing from information, so Qimage shows that as blank too.
Therefore the only thing I actually see missing is the camera model in the TIF

Thanks Fred and Terry for your replies.  Fred, I have sent you an original RW2 file plus the converted TIF and JPG files, by WETRANSFER.  As you will see the full EXIF information (camera, model and lens) is only missing from the TIF file - everything is intact in the JPG file.  As I said in my original post and as Terry has confirmed, the problem did not occur in earlier versions of QU.  I hope you or Mike can help.

Regards,

Glenn,
Nothing here yet. Did you get a confirmation email from We Transfer?
Any chance of a typo on my email address?
wathree.ssz@verizon.net
Maybe resend?

Got it
Fred passed this to me too.
I get PT lens to show the data with a tiff but then if I go to another folder and Canon image, the Panasonic data is still there so it seems that PT Lens is not behaving properly despite exif data being present. It was ok until I opened the Panasonic image.

Glenn,
Wow that is an extraordinary shot. I had to look up the camera. It comes with a LEICA lens. Is that what you used?
It is sharp from front to back, and looks like 3D.

Hello Fred,
Yes, the DMC-LF1 comes with a fixed Leica Summicron 1:2.0 - 5.9/6.0-42.8 lens and performs pretty well given its very small size.  It does suffer from CA in high contrast (twigs against sky) as well as barrel distortion at wide apertures, as you might expect and the Panasonic software does a good job in correcting this in JPGs.  However that rather negates the advantages of shooting RAW and the camera-produced JPGs can't compete with the dynamic range produced by developing in QU. I'm still fiddling about trying to get the best QU parameters for RAW development sharpening, but I'm getting there.

I bought the camera for fly-fishing and hiking expeditions, where a standard SLR was just too bulky and got in the way of the serious business - the LF1 fits nicely in my jacket pocket, weighs next-to-nothing and it also takes great HD videos.  It's a compromise of course, but I'm quite happy with the results; I'm wondering whether it's worth asking Mike to produce a lens profile for this camera - if so how do I go about it?

Many thanks for your rapid replies and interest and also very much to Terry for the tips on PTLens.
