Title: What is 'Fill light'?
Post by: jana on December 01, 2022, 06:16:22 PM
A very stupid question, yes I know, and that's because I've used Qimage for many, many years (and love it) and I'm therefore expected to know the answer myself.....but I don't :-)

And what I don't quite understand is: what exactly is 'Fill light'? When is this adjustment used? Is there something similar in, for example, Adobe Lightroom?

And no, English is not my mother tongue :-)

Many tools have a fill light option but some may call it something different.  Fill light does what the name might imply if you are used to using a camera flash to fill in shadows: it brings up the shadows a bit without affecting the highlights too much.  I don't know about Lightroom (I don't use Adobe products) but if they don't call it fill light, they probably have a similar feature even if it is to simply adjust shadows.

Regards,
Mike

I usually explain it in this fashion.  Fill light has the property of reducing contrast as you add more + Fill. Conversely, minus fill light darkens and increasing contrast.  That would be the difference between Brightness and fill light.
Hope this helps.

Ahh! OK.

Then Fill light was about what I thought it was, but wasn't quite sure. Now I'm sure :-)

Thank you very much for the explanation Mike and Fred.
