Title: Where do my cut and paste before files appear?
Post by: tonygamble on December 05, 2013, 02:08:44 PM
I have an almost full page of shots built so each one touches.

The page is not quite full.

I select a few more shots and they appear on page two.

I 'cut' a shot from page two. I move to page one. I click 'paste before' but I cannot see where the shot has been placed.

My guess is that it is underneath one of the hundred or so shots on that page.

How can I find it please so I can move it to start another line of images?

Sorry if this has been asked before - but I could not find it in 'search'.

Tony

Hi Tony,
This seems to happen when the pages are in Freehand mode.

I did a check with 6 images on 2 pages, cut from page 2 and pasted before the 1st image on page 1 - it disappeared!
I could see it in the Queue tab list but nowhere on either page.
As soon as I changed the placement to one that was not Freehand, the image appeared.
If you can manage without using Freehand mode for now, I'll get Fred speak to Mike about it.

Hi Terry and Mike,

It does perform in an odd way.

I had a page one that was almost full of small images.

I had some images on a second page.

I clicked on one of those on page two and did CTL v. I mean CTL x of course (cut).

I move back to page one.

I picked the bottom right image on page one.

I did CTL u (paste before) and there was a blue frame round one of the images on the top row of page one.

I clicked on it and pulled it to the bottom. I 'think' I brought the underlying image down to the bottom and not the one I had cut and pasted from page two.

Odd !

Tony,
You have not said what placement mode you were in, was it Freehand. All works ok if not Freehand.

Terry,

I did not think I could cut and paste if I was not in freehand and edit mode.

Thanks Terry,

I'm going to my studio machine now.

I'll have another go.

Tony I would love to help, but I need to be able to repeat your situation here.

What size page, what size prints, and how many?
Orientation locked?
What placement mode does are you using??
Crop on or off?
If I set my placement mode to COMPACT, and add 12-2 x 3 prints to my 8.5 x 11 page, the 13th one goes to page 2.
If I click  OPTIMAL, the 13th print goes back to page 1.

Info please!!

Fred,

Off out for a mo'. Will reply later.

In the meantime in answer to what Terry said - if I place my shots on Page one in Freehand mode, which I have to as they are two different sizes, I cannot add another shot from Page Three as turning off the Page One Freehand destroys the layout.

I'll give more info later.

Bye,

Tony

That's not correct, you can have any mix you like - select and change size  ::)
I've done some more checks and your problem seems to be trying to paste to a page that was already full in Freehand mode. Use Optimal, or Centre etc. and it will be ok.

Ok Fred,

That is the page I have built.

It is A3+.
The larger print in the middle is about 8cm by 12cm
All the others are 3cm square.
How many? About 150.
Orientation locked.
Placement mode is Optimal as I wanted them as tight as possible.

EDIT. I think I was probably using Compact.

I have let QU crop them into square images.

I started by loading the larger image.
I then loaded all the small square ones.
There was more than one page could take so I ended up with a partially filled page two.

The only way I could move the larger image from the top left corner was by going into Freehand.

This then forced some more of the smaller ones onto page two.

As the images came up in filename order it bunched similar images together. I started by moving some around on page one.

I then wanted to include some of the page two images. This is where I hit problems.

I picked a page two image using CTL X.

I picked the bottom right (in my view the 'last' image) on page one and it had a blue border to show it had been selected. I then did Paste Before with CTL U.

Sometimes I saw an image somewhere near the top left with a blue outline. If I clicked and dragged it I found I was not dragging the new image - but dragging the original. Sometimes I saw no blue outline at all so I have no idea where my pasted image could have gone.

Terry says I should not work Freehand - but if I turn Freehand off on page one my images cease to cluster around the large one.

I can see something has just  been posted whilst I am writing this. I'll post  this and see what has just come up.

EDIT. After lunch I will look at the pages again and use Optimal. I hope that will then let me add new images - but you can see that my A3+ page is not 'full'. There is space at the bottom.

Bye

Tony

No such thing as FULL in free hand mode. Keep adding pictures by dragging from the thumbs and you can overlay as many  as you want.

Fred,

I cannot drag more images from the thumbs. I have already selected all of them. Problem is some are on page two and I want them on page one.

Ok Tony, I just sent Terry a video...
I don't have a problem here using CUT and PASTE; cut from page two and Paste onto page one; Pages in Freehand mode.
You might have to look underneath the full page , page one, but it's there.
Terry will sort you out!

Happy Holidays,
Fred

OK. let's forget about the perceived problem with cut & paste in Freehand mode. With that number of images on a page no wonder you lost one!
Lets get to the job you are trying to do ....
I reproduced your page with your given approximate  dimensions, exact would have been better!
See screen shot attached.
1. Used Optimal Spaced but Optimal would do but leave white space at side & bottom of page.
2. Added 30mmsqure image to queue until I was at ABOUT the right point to add the 80x120mm image by selecting a batch and used the red + icon.
3 Added 80x120mm image and then continued to add 30x30mm images until page was full by selecting a batch and using the red+ icon; some spilled over to page 2.
4 Opened page editor cut and pasted the 80x120 image to the exact position where I wanted it.
5 If I wanted to move an image from page 2 to page 1, cut and paste as appropriate, note that it may move the 80x120 image so that may need adjusting for position.

Easy peasy took me less than 5 mins  ;D

Thanks Terry,

Fine until point 5.

I have an image on page two that I want to use.

I select it with CTL X

I move to page one which is in Freehand mode - or isn't it.

How do I place my image at (a) a chosen place on page one?

What do I click and with what instruction?

No, must be in Optimal or similar, NOT Freehand.

Select an image on page 1, right click and choose paste before (ctrl U) or Paste after (ctrl V) as appropriate.
Small changes can be made in the queue, (page preview) with move up or down from the RMB menu.

Thanks Terry,

My problem seems to be the use of Compact and not Optimal. I can see it working now.

I also see that if I drag an image to another part of the page the page automatically changes to Freehand. I don't suppose that matters but I thought it worth noting if this thread becomes any use to anyone else.

That is a standard feature and logical. Do any final tweaking of position last.
