Title: 2010.104 on Win 7 - Range Check Error
Post by: onetrack on December 06, 2009, 01:58:38 AM
I'm just moving my stuff to a new Win 7 computer.

I'm getting a "range check error" at the end of the print to file process.  File looks OK as far as I can tell.

What's up?

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,
This happens in W7? 32 or 64 bit?
Could you supply some details; print to file, page size, resolution, and profiles to be embedded, using the printer dot or the web dot, and anything out of the ordinary with the source image.?
Will it print to paper OK?
Can you repeat the error, or was it just on that session with Qimage.? Are you running the latest version of Qimage, and which level; Studio or Pro or Lite?
All this will help.
Fred

OS = Win 7 Professional 64-bit
Qimage installed in Program Files x86
I only print to file and send to lab.
Qimage Pro, latest;
All print sizes, tried both pyramid and hybrid processes;
I've rebooted and restarted, happens every time.

Are you also installed in C:\ProgramData\ddisoftware\Qimage    ??
In order to try to replicate, it would be helpful to be able to repeat your settings.
Dot in RGB or printer?
Any profile that will be embedded?
What sizes... page and resolution?
Any and all information you can supply would help.

OK, this is interesting.  It only happens when printing in Landscape.  Portrait orientation is OK.

No, installation is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Qimage";

Profile is sRGB for commercial printer;

I've done a bunch of sizes, 5x7, 8x10, 11x14, & 16x20.

Scratch that.  It's happening on the same shot in portrait 4x6.  When I get the error, it does not ask to delete the queue.

I'm printing directly from 16-bit PSD files.

Let me see if I can find someone to make a PSD file in 16 bit around here.
What are the settings,,,,, resolution and page size. You gave me print size.
Thanks,

Please check whether you have Qimage installed in this location besides the x86

No DDI Software folder in Program Files (x86) or Program Files.

Should I reinstall?  I need to make sure I don't lose any of my setup data but I think that's elsewhere, right?

See screen snaps.
I don't know if you manipulated the locations when you installed Qimage or not.
As you click Next during the install procedure, see that the paths look like image 28, and then next screen, image 29.

Please tell me the resolution, page size, and whether you are creating a TIF or a JPG.
I cannot help you if you don't supply the info I need to try to repeat what you are getting.

I had the same problem of not finding the folders as Fred is showing. I went to Control Panel/Folders Options/Show Hidden files  and selected unhide folders. When I went back to the C: program data (right below Program Files x86)-  was there and all the files Fred is showing were in that directory. For some reason the show hidden files things is set as a default and you can't ever find what your looking for. Anyway, hope that helps...

Application in "Program Files (x86)\Qimage".

Application Data in "ProgramData\ddisoftware\Qimage".

Sorry,  Cannot repeat the problem without knowing the page size and resolution and tif or jpg; everythying you are doing, step by step.

Sorry if I didn't cover everything.  I'll try again.

Win 7, 64 bit;
Qimage, 2010.104, default install, no changes.
Input is PSD.
Output is JPG
Printer ICC = sRGB IEC61966-2.1
Interp = Hybrid
Sharpen = 5
Background color = black
Print sizes = paper sizes
Sometimes I crop in QImage, others did not need cropping.
No borders;
All sizes of prints 4x6 up to 16x20 show the Range Check Error.
I just installed on this computer a few days ago so I don't think I've made any other changes.

What did I miss?

What did I miss?
If sharpen is showing as 5, do I assume you are making a PRINTER FILE?
Do you use that sRGB profile as a printer profile?
What size is the page that you are making?
What is the resolution of the page you are making?
Print size =paper size, means what? You make a 5 x 7 print on a 5 x 7 paper size? If that is true, then how is the background color black? There is no background left to color.

Give me the steps you take as you set up to make a 5 x 7 print to File.

1) Open Qimage
2) Click FILE and PRINT TO, and select FILE
3) What do you do now?

Print to file.
sRGB
I've tried 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 11x14, & 16x20 since that's what I've ordered today.  Paper is same size as print.
300 dpi
I leave the background color as black because I also use templates for doing 8.5 x 11 proof sheets.  Not applicable when print is the same size as the paper.

Open Qimage.
It's always on "print to file" so I never change it.
Add file (.PSD) to queue.
If aspect ratio is not 4x6, then I click on the full page editor and crop.  Sometimes I use precision crop, other times just the crop controls.  Click Done.
If Interpolation is set the way I want (usually Hybrid), then I use "<Ctrl><P>" to start the print.
Select the target folder and let it print to the file.
When done, I have Qimage set to ask me if I want to clear the queue but when this error happens, it never gets to that question.

Thank you for the information.
I have a 16 bit psd file as source. I set Print to file at 300 ppi and 8 x 10 size.
I set print size to 8 x 10.
Ctrl P to Print, and it works every time.
I changed to 5 x 7; same set, page at 5 x 7 at 300 ppi, and print size 5 x 7. Works perfectly.

Have you tried a different source file that isn't a PSD file?

I tried an 8-bit PSD and a JPG.  Same results.

I might try an uninstall/reinstall or perhaps an older version.

Thanks for your time.

After reading this entire thread, it's starting to sound like either some Qimage setting is corrupted or something (anti-malware program maybe) is interfering.  Here's what I'd suggest that will get us to the answer the fastest:

(1) In Qimage, select "Help", "Reset all program settings".

(2) Restart Qimage and set up your print to file and other settings appropriately.  Do not load previously saved setups or jobs: they could be the ones that are corrupted.  Do everything manually.

(3) Temporarily disable all anti-malware/anti-virus software.

(4) Try the printing process again.

Please report the results here.

Thanks,
Mike

First time I've tried printing to file under Win 7 64 bit and I'm also getting Range Check Error as QI (Studio Edition) v 2010.104 processes the first file.  I'm printing 12x8 300 ppi files with sRGB profile.

I'll try Mike's suggestions and report back.

When I restarted QI it has already reset itself to a default state and lost my settings, off to try some more.

It no longer retains my monitor profile and is advising me each time I start up that the Windows and QI monitor profiles are mismatched, it's also asking each time if I want to take the tour. :-(

I can now only run QI by selecting Run as Administrator (even though I'm currently logged in as an administrator) so the initial failure has certainly caused some 'damage' to the QI installation.  Reset print options, disabled anti-virus software but still getting Range check error as QI processes the first file.  After clicking to acknowledge the range check error when I try to close QI I receive an I/O error 103, second and further attempts to close QI gives I/O error 32 - the only way to get out is File>Exit without saving settings.  I also had these errors after the first failure.

I think I would do a complete uninstall and reinstall, but making sure your anti virus and any Malware apps are disabled during the install process.
You can turn them back on after the install.
Also be sure that you didn't change any install folder locations during the install, and that they look like the screen snaps that were attached to messages to Onetrack just before yours.
I found them so I am attaching here too.

Many thanks for the suggestions / screenshots.  I've reinstalled QI, it's back to being 'stable' and saving my settings.

Unfortunately I'm still getting the Range check error on the first file when I try and print to file but I'm no longer receiving the I/O errors when I try to subsequently exit QI.

I guess I'm going to have to use my XP laptop to get this current batch of work completed.

I wonder if other people are able to print to file from QI under Win 7 64 bit?  It would be really helpful to know if this is a general or local issue.  From past posting on the old group it seems only a small percentage of users actually use print to file to prepare files for lab printing, most seem to use QI to print to physical printers, I'm not having any problems printing to my printer from QI under Win 7 64 just the problem with print to file.

Stephen,
That is one of the reasons I took it upon myself to try to help. I am running W7 64 bit and can print to file all day long and never have an issue.
Did you turn of the Anti virus and any Malware to see if the Range Error stops when you print to file?
Some packages actually check a created or moved file for viruses  and that could foul up the works.
You are the seond one to report a Range error on here, and the first fellow was given the same advice by Mike, and we have not heard anything bad since.
We assume that it got fixed.
It's really hard to nail this down as it could be another app interfering with the process.

I have Diskkeeper 2009 and Acronis 2010 on my machine.
If I let Diskkeeper run in auto mode where it is defragging constantly on the fly, my Acronis ONE CLICK does not work.
I disable the auto defrag, then Acronis ONE CLICK works fine.
At least we made some progress.

Thanks for getting back.  I did disable the anti-virus software (McAfee) but no change.  Everything was working fine under Vista 64, it's the same machine with the same antivirus etc just an upgrade to Win7 64.  My XP laptop is currently reading the same files via the network, processing them in QI and writing files to the same output directory on my Win 7 machine without problems.

I'll have to patiently wait and see if anyone else is experiencing similar problems, at least I have a work around for the time being and it fails writing the first file under Win 7 so I don't have to wait to see if it's going to fail.

It's definitely something local.  I actually develop Qimage on a Win7 64 bit machine and I've used print-to-file hundreds of times just in the last week in testing things like the latest canvas edge features, etc.  Can't find a problem anywhere.

Have you tried all output formats: JPEG, TIFF, and BMP?  Do they all give the error?  This is going to be nearly impossible to fix unless I have some way to replicate it here.

A screen shot of your setup with all main window panels open (showing how things are right before you click print) might help.

Hi Mike

Just a quick test trying to print three images to file as jpg, it failed on the first file.

I've attached some screen shots.

I'll try some alternative output formats and report back.

Stephen

It's creating TIF output files without problem.

It's creating BMP output files without problem.

It only seems to be a problem creating JPG output files.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.  That helps, but even after I replicate your settings as exactly as I can, I still get no errors.  The only thing I can suggest at this point as changing some variables that don't matter.  For example, go back to printing to JPG files but change your output folder to a brand new folder that has never been used before.  See if that changes anything.

No difference when I try to print to a new folder or existing folder or to a new folder on a different drive.

I just tried processing a single file and the status bar at the bottom right of QI reached 100% with Finished Processing below and then the Range check error appeared the output file has been created.  It looks like the error is appearing after the first file has been written.

The PrtrICC is also having an effect, if I select sRGB, Adobe98 or the custom lab profile then the print to file (as jpg) fails, however if I select a CanonBJ profile the print to file works.

Stephen,
Good morning again.
I am following your reports and mimicking them to try to repeat the Range error.
I am curious about something.
When I select Argb or sRGB as a printer output profile, Qimage sort of warns me that the profile I selected is really not a printer output profile,  by saying in RED letters that it will manage the color using this profile. If I use a normal printer output profile the red letters return to normal black.
Just wondering if you are seeing that also when selecting a profile to use from the Color Management box?
Also along the same line of thinking, in order to avail yourself of these profiles you have to skirt the normal list of OUTPUT profiles and select ALL Profiles to see those.
Again, since you didn't mention any of this, are you seeing this too?
The other possibility is that the image you selected already has an embedded profile? Any chance of that?

Fred

Ray,
Your message seems to be blank on the forum screen, but I read it OK in the email advisory.
That is an excellent idea.
I have to run out for a while though, so I might ask that Stephen send me the JPG he uses that makes the error, and I can see if I can get the error after I get back after lunch.

Knowing Mike, he will probably have it all tidy and fixed before Stephen even reads this. :-)
anyway, my email is wathree.ssz@verizon.net

Mike - The new release appears to have cured my problems, I've just run the files through and it has created the output files with sRGB profile.  Many thanks for the fix.

Fred - Yes I often need to print to file using the utility profiles sRGB or AdobeRGB as some of the labs I use require files with these profiles embedded.  One other lab I use provides a specific profile for their printer.  My 'input' files for this particular batch were already sRGB but I prefer to let QI process to whatever output profile I require for the specific print job, it saves me having to be concerned with whatever profile the input files currently have and perhaps forgetting to perform the conversion elsewhere.  I see the red message when I select the utility profiles.  I always use QI to prepare my files for lab printing as it is so much better and easier to crop (if necessary), interpolate and sharpen than for example batching in Photoshop.
