Title: Feature Request - Templates
Post by: BrianPrice on July 09, 2009, 08:45:04 AM
Mike
I mentioned this before, but it may have got lost in the Yahoo emails.
When you are using a layout on 2 or more prints and you clear the queue using Control + Delete you get a (very useful) dialog box saying 'Do you want to continue working with the layout?'. However, if you have just one image in the queue and delete it, you don't get the box - you always slip out of the layout. This causes us problems when we are doing event photography and are always under pressure - the layout only puts the file number on in a small font and applies a filter to lighten or darken the prints, so it is not obvious that you have dropped out of the layout. Could you give us the dialog box when we just delete one print from the queue?
And another quick one - could I have an 'Outline' option for floating text along with 'Shadow'?

Thanks

Brian

Just right click in the queue and select "Clear Queue".  This will work even if you only have one image in the queue.  It's designed to only ask you if you want to retain the layout if you clear the entire queue: if you only select one print, that leaves one template left on the page which is why it isn't asking you.  The "Clear Queue" should take care of that.

On the text outline, what kind of outline are we talking about?

Thanks Mike - I was using 'Delete' to clear a single print, 'Control + Delete' brings up the box correctly (I'm not a right-clicker  :)).

The outline I'm after is a 1 pixel keyline -

This one was done in Photoshop, it makes white text more visible against a white or light background. as well as dark backgrounds.

Brian.
I just did this in Qimage. One had a thin black outline, and the other, a red outline. Of course, these are made using the shadow feature, But they compare closely to your sample.
I could select a different font and a larger point size
See snaps.

I might have clicked one image twice. Apologize, if I did.  :-[

Thanks Fred. I had tried Shadow, but it's not as neat, clear or as legible, especially with small fonts on a white background:

Maybe I'm missing something, but why not just use a darker color when you are placing text on a bright area?  Light gray with a dark gray shadow looks better than just an outline for example.

It's for a specific application, event photography. We can shoot and print anything up to 200 prints in an evening, and each one needs the file number in the bottom right hand corner. The background in the corner changes from print to print - one can be an upright with white background paper in the corner, the next a landscape group with a black suit there, and we don't have time to change anything.
It's not a huge deal breaker - QI makes this type of printing easy and we've managed with the numbering up to now, but I'm always trying to improve things.

Hmm.  Just thinking.  How about an outside (B+) border and put the text in the border so it never changes color.  Text outline isn't an option on the text tools I'm using so it wouldn't be easy to implement.

I tried the border option but the 'Powers That Be' wouldn't have it. As I said it's not a big deal, I'm sure you have more productive features to be getting on with.

Brian

Fred - now you've sorted the images out, why is my Quote not working?
