Hi. Quite a few times now when ising Q Studio I get an error box occurring as I leave the box that lets you set the size and position on your image on the paper. It is a small box with  X in the top right for closing it and the error in the middle is written as Invalid Pointer Operation. Closing the box seems to allow me to carry on. I might add that earlier Qimage had crashed out when tying to leave the full page editor. I had asked questions about that previously on this forum and sadly it has not gone away either. but comments on the Pointer error would be good.

Hi Jules,
Since no one else has reported such an occurrence in a long time, if ever,  it is likely some combination of events such as an antivirus or similar anti spyware interference.
Regardless, the bottom line is: It's time to move to a fully supported Qimage Ultimate.
You will love it!

First, are you running the last version distributed 2010.210? Do help about or catch it in the opening screen.

Invalid pointer means that the application is trying to address an area of RAM not allowed. Since it is intermittent it could be a unique combination of what other applications and services are running concurrently soaking up RAM. If it is intermittent when trying to open the same image then it is not that QImage can't handle that format. I had one test image that would crash Q if it was in a folder that contained other images. It looks like the old Mac reversed byte .jpeg or .tif format. .jpeg is different than .jpg.

What is your Win version? Does crashing seem dependent on the folder where the image is located. Size of the image also matters in terms of dimensions and resolution including bit depth (after being decompressed).

Make sure there is plenty of empty disk space for your temporary files created during using Q and printing. Limit the amount of large byte size files in the queue at any time.

.....I'm running Windows version 5.1 on a PC running XP

Does crashing seem dependent on the folder where the image is located.
.....That I am not sure as I haven't documented these crashes each time.

.....I tend not to have large queues. I have a fair amount of space free on my C drive.

I don't know what's going on with my Q Studio. Yesterday it crashed more than it ran and i am trying to get my exhibition prints together. It does not seem to be the file type as I tested .jpg, .tif and .psd. The file size has not changed excessively from when I used to print successfully. It's a real pain. I suppose I will have to try and update to Ultimate although it has nothing extra that i need from Studio. I do all my adjustment6s in PhotoShop and only print from Q. I just prefer Q to printing from PhotoShop which is a pain. I just hope paying the extra for Ultimate cure4s these crashes.
Question. When I download Ultimate will it automaticall locate all my paper profiles that i used before without any trouble? Will I seamlessly be able to carry on printing without hassle, I can't get held up. I guess I will have to re enter all my print sizes which will not be a problem.

Jules,
In a previous post, I advised that you upgrade to Ultimate. I still advise the same, but I need to mitigate that by saying that I spent about a half hour or so really investigating the reports of Invalid Pointer Operation.
It appears that Ronzie hit the nail on the head.  About 75% pf the replies refer to some other program either using memory and not releasing it, or the Operating system in disagreement with some program on memory allocation.
The other 25% seem to favor some Malware.

Since we have thousands running Studio with no similar error messages, it has to be some program on your machine in conflict with memory allocation somewhere.
There were a few tech replies that said the fix was to go to Windows 7 which had far superior memory management.

With regard to upgrading to Ultimate, all your saved setups and jobs will be migrated to a new folder and you still keep and use them.

I know it's a pain to suffer these error messages, and many pieces of advice do not always effect the cure, so I am suggesting that you might think of checking your memory for no bad sticks, and then moving up into W7 to see if that cures the error message.
I also suggest W7 because program authors writing software try to use the tools that W7 offers, and sometimes, XP users suffer.
So that's how you could possibly have a conflict over memory chunks.

I wanted to you to upgrade to Ultimate mainly for you to get the full benefit of the latest upgrade to printing quality (Fusion, found only in Ultimate) plus all the other goodies like Tone Targeted Sharpening, etc.

Ultimate might cure the Invalid Point error message, but you will have to at least try the DEMO version to see.

Thanks for listening.

Thanks for your fast reply Fred. I quite agree that the problems may be malware on my computer and the help you gave me before did not go unnoticed so thanks again for that. I had a complete reinstall of everything done on my PC only a couple of months ago and I run NOD32 which up to now has kept unwanted viruses from my machine, but who knows. I guess a trial run of Ultimate would be a good idea and will probably give that a go and see if it stops the crashes.

Fred. I downloaded Q Ultimate and opened it, it asked to delete the existing thumbnail cache and I ok'd that. It opened fine and after a bit loaded my thumbnails. I Recalled a print job which it loaded fine. I have now reopened ultimate about five times and tried different things/images/jobs. Everything seems to work fine EXCEPT clicking on the Edit Page (lower right under image) OR CTRL/E or R/Click image and choose Edit Image from there. All of these open the Edit page for a fraction of a second and then the programme crashes out. This happens in Ultimate, just as it did in Studio. It is obviously something to do with opening the Edit page. Have you any idea what it could be and why it is happening. Any advice as what to do? There is no point me buying Ultimate if this happens with it as well as Studio is there. I guess it is my computer as no one else has complained about this, but what can it be?

That's precisely why I asked you to try the demo.
The computer needs attention.
Now we need Mike C. or any other person who is knowledgeable with the inner workings of Windows to step in and offer some test suggestions.
We have determined that something within your computer is adversely affecting Qimage, Studio or Ultimate.
I am going to try a SAFE MODE boot and see if Qimage runs like that.
You might try that too.

That is a bit beyond my skills Fred. I know what is is but am not confident enough to try it without someone holding my hand. Why would it change the way Q would run?

If the only crash you are getting is when you try to edit an image, it could be a corrupted image header.  Have you tried starting Qimage Ultimate fresh and then using image edit on a non-edited image straight from a camera... or even a sample picture from "My Pictures"?

Hi mike. I have now tried different images and a jpg from a different source and am now managing not to get any crashes. I did run C Cleaner and maybe this has helped. PhotoShop which I also use on this PC is always stable. It seems to be intermittent which of course makes things more difficult to pin down. I have had this problem in the past with Studio and then it has gone away and then returned so I will monitor things and report back. It is in fact the only problem i have had with Qimage generally. But hopefuly, things this morning do seem to be better. I have tried different files and formats in both Studio and the trial version of Ultimate. At one point I did get this error... Access violation at address 00423048 in module 'Qimage'exe' . Write address 9D85B529  Does this mean anything to anyone? I have tried a file straight from camer and this too seems to able to be Edited too without problem.
Thanks for your help. I just hope thisngs stay stable now.

Incidentally. I was just looking at previous posts on this forum and discovered that Johsef had posted about a similar problem of the Edit page crashing when opened. So perhaps this is not peculiar to my machine. See...

Next crash go to the XP Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and click Event Viewer. Look for any read error events. Double-Click on the event and see what info it offers, if any. Click the down arrow box to read the next until you are past the sequential read tagged errors.

Maybe something meaningful will give you a clue.

The events are last at the top and you scroll down for earlier time stamped events.

There is a free system utility that can help from MS. Go to:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb545027
Download Process Explorer v14.12 (May 18, 2011). Unzip the .exe into a convenient folder and create a shortcut to it. Start it up.

Right click on its status bar at the left bottom of its window. Set it up like the attached image. keep an eye on physical ram by alt-tabbing to it. If you happen to have a dual monitor setup for editing place that window there. If it looks like physical ram keeps climbing near a hundred percent. Also right click on the column header bar. Add virtual size as in the other attached file. See what process is eating up the virtual ram.
