Hello.

Has anyone come up with a list of printers that are compatible with the "Using the poster feature to overcome your print driver's maximum page length limitation" function of qimage?

I have tried this feature a couple of times with the banner option in this printer's setup without success.

Are there any recommended printers under $500 that can be used for the poster feature of Qimage?

So far, the rule has been, if the printer driver has a roll paper option and banner mode, Qimage will make a print as wide as the roll and as long as the rull extends.
Please advise what printer you are using, and what size print you wish to make.

BTW, Poster mode can be used on any printer as you will end up with your print on multiple sheets which need to be pasted together.
So it would also be helpful to know what you are trying to make.

Hi Fred. I should have been more specific.

I use a HP Deskjet 6122 and it has a setting for Paper Type: HP Banner Paper
and
Paper Size: Banner 8.5" x 11"

My overall goal is to print a series of pictures side-by-side on the same sheet of paper. The dimensions will be 8.5" wide x 70".

I have the feeling I will need a different printer. Is there anything in the market for $500 or under?

My main Qimage use will be the poster feature (http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage/qimagehlp/lbe.htm#6a).

Also, do I need a printer that can utilize roll paper and banner paper or either one of those?

Any printer that will handle a roll of paper..... I have an Epson R1800 (now sold as an R 1900) and it will handke a 13" wide roll and print as long as you have paper.
It is well under 500 dollars.
You have opened the flood gates.
There will be more suggestions for a printer that uses roll paper and is under 500.

There is no banner mode on the HP Z3100 or Z3200 with the PCL3 drivers. The drivers have roll mode and the printers use rolls. The roll mode is not compatible with Qimage's Poster/Tiles method as described in Learn by Example 6a. Between the tiles a double margin of 5 mm is placed = a white band of 10 mm give or take one mm.

So the "Learn by Example 6a" incorrectly states that Qimage will print posters (without the margin) on roll feed capable printers?

Fred, will the Epson R1900 print continuously without the margin/band that Ernst mentions? If that is the case, I won't need to use the poster feature of Qimage.

Do you have any caveats for regarding the R1900?

Yes, The R1800/1900 will print with no page breaks or other breaks. I use the other method of User Defined page size in the driver, and I can tell the printer and Qimage that I want to print on (example: 12.50 wide x 120.00 long.) You will get a 10 foot long print!!!
It will print perfectly. That is a 13.00 inch wide roll. You can also get rolls for that printer in 8.5 inches wide too.
To clarify, if you use roll paper, you would use the banner mode and User Defined page size.
If you are using the standard 8.5 x 11 sheet paper, then poster mode can be used and will make multiple sheets which you will have to paste together using scotch tape
This printer is well under 500 dollars, your range.

I wrote that reply because you mentioned an HP model in your second message and Fred wrote that any printer with a roll option is compatible.
I guess 95% of the printers with a roll option and a Windows driver will be compatible with Qimage's very nice Poster/Tiles feature but the HP Z models are not compatible. I have no knowledge whether that stretches to your HP printer but it could so I mentioned the Z model's handicap.

The Z models can print very long prints if they have the optional HPGL2 driver or belong to the -PS category, otherwise they stay below 109" print length.

Epsons + Canons with roll feed will be compatible.

You got me there.
I have no idea what the limitations of print sizes are using other applications to print as well as other drivers for other models.
I have been printing with Qimage since it came out; about 11 or 12 years ago? Can't remember.

As for ink usage.
Again, you got me there.
Frankly, I really don't make an issue over ink. I do make an issue over how my prints look and how they are held in awe by those viewing them.
At that point, I couldn't care less about the amount of ink I used.
All that said, there are many on here that factor ink costs into their equation as business people.
They will be most happy to give you some insight.

Depending on the subject and media preset a square meter will take 5 to 12 ml of ink for most printers. A square meter is roughly 11 square feet. The 1900 will add gloss enhancer like the HP Z models do on gloss papers. Then a maximum of 15 ML of ink per square meter for the heaviest subject is a save bet. This doesn't count the cleaning process or what is left in carts that are declared empty. The Epsons do not have a great reputation on ink economy, a lot of ink is wasted. The older Epson 9000 on average used 17 ML a square meter, a 220 ML cart on one roll of 44" wide x 40' Photorag, all ink use included. On my HP Z  models it is 40% less including the use of gloss papers + gloss enhancer. You will see other estimations like 2 ml a square foot all included for the Epson 3800.

Sorry, answers like that are never simple.
