I'm trying to print 18x28 canvas with an additional 1.25 mirror border with Qimage using HP Designjet 130. I selected "CANVAS print with wrap", 1.25 mirror for sides, 0 for back, no fold marks, auto crop on, print orientation unlocked. However in the Queue it indicates "18.00 x 26.78 (incl. border)". The page size is 24x34

Print Properties shows auto crop on, Borders "m" 1.25 b+. If I click b, then the queue changes to 18x28.

HP driver settings indicate "actual size".

I re-entered the settings using "Enter Specific Size" and checked "Use 20.5 x 30.5: add 1.25 border(s)" and the queue changes to "18.00 x 28.00 (incl. border)"

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jones,

What version of Qimage are you using? Studio/ultra/version number. I may be able to help if studio a bit later on, but probably not if ultra. If ultra, maybe repost in there.

Best wishes,

Ray

You must use B+ for canvas wrap borders. The overall size in the queue data should then show your print size as the image size plus the borders.
for you 18x28, the overall size would be 20.5 x 30.5.
Just make sure the printable area is greater than that, see numbers above the Qimage page preview. If the driver page margins are too large, that could be the problem.

I cannot find any margin settings in the driver. The paper/printable area is 23.605 x 33.330.  I do have b+ on. I was just noting that the size increases from 18 x 26.78 to 18 x 28 when I switch from b+ to b. Strange.

Hi Jones,

If you've not already done so, sign up to the Studio threads  - here' how - http://ddisoftware.com/tech/how-to-join-the-qimage-studio-forum/here%27s-how-to-join-the-qimage-studio-discussion/

You will see how paper sizes/wraps can catch us out in there. I do not have an HP printer, nor one that prints larger than 17.5 inches wide, but I have tried to simulate you problem. The only odd thing that I can see is happening, although it could well be something else, is that maybe you are cropping/or not cropping the image, or possibly not actually selecting the image when you apply the size/border settings, and of course the mix ups that occur if the print driver/Qimage is set to borderless printing. Do not mess with the template setting, leave it centred.

The way I work it, is to ensure I've set a large enough page size (in the printer driver) then set the custom specific size in Qimage (I do not select size with borders, or cropping there, just the actual size of the main image). I then drag the thumbnail over to the page layout view, to lhs  of screen. It comes with it's previous settings/borders whatever. I then click on the image (this selects it, and it then gets a blue border in my case on the page view if you have selected a different skin, then it may be different) and I adjust the crop (scissors icon) and borders from the area labelled 'print properties' towards bottom rh of main screen. If you set borders elsewhere, some functions are not available/don't always work e.g in fp editor. If the original image shape is not the same as the print shape, then you will need to crop. 'B+' adds the borders to the custom size selected, 'B' (should strictly be annotated 'B-') puts the borders inside the custom size. I would guess you have the image proportions nearly the same as the custom size proportions, and may not notice the slight visible size change, if indeed it is visible. Often, I have found it is best to clear the image from the queue, and start again. Continually cropping/changing borders/templates/rotating whatever will cause errors.

Finally, I position the image (click and drag) to the position I want on the canvas.

Others may do it some other way, but this works for me (usually Wink)

hth.

Best wishes,

Ray

ps you can automatically upgrade to the latest version 2010.209, which may have corrected some of the errors you find, but you've still got to be pretty careful in exactly what you do. fwiw, the few hours I played with Ultra demo, it seemed to be just as tricky.

There's no problem with the printable area by the look of it.
Going back to your first post:
Quote
I selected "CANVAS print with wrap"
Where was this, in Qimage or the driver? I ask because that is not the wording in the Qimage border setting for a mirror wrap, it is "Canvas Edge (Mirror)"
If it's in the driver, then that is the problem with you not getting correct sizes. All the setting for a wrap should be done in Qimage and plain 24x34 page should be used. I just wanted to get that point cleared up.

I have simulated your requirements with an Epson 4880 driver with 24x36 paper (the nearest to yours in the standard list)
All the dimensions are as I expected with a Border 1 as B+ of 1.25" and an 18x28 image print size.
The overall size is 20.5 x 30.5. If I do switch to B as you did, the overall size goes to 18x28 as expected - but that's not particularly relevant, what matters is the overall size with B+

When you said:
Quote
I re-entered the settings using "Enter Specific Size" and checked "Use 20.5 x 30.5: add 1.25 border(s)" and the queue changes to "18.00 x 28.00 (incl. border)"
That is the wrong way to set up a wrap border, the size set must be the 18x20 and the wrap border set as a M 1.25 M B+

See attached below for  the settings and queue data I used to simulate your requirement.

V208 to V209 did not make any changes to canvas wrap features, they have been stable for some time Smiley
"Tricky" naah!. Canvas wrap works just the same in Ultimate (not "Ultra" btw). Qimage Studio & Ultimate worked faultlessly for wraps I have done, first time every time and for Jones's requirement - and I'm not a regular user of the feature.
I agree with you sequence of selecting print size, border type & size and then placing the image in the queue is the most logical but it works just as well if the image is placed in the queue first, selected and then the size & border are specified. It's not as difficult as you make out IMHO.  Roll Eyes

Hi Terry,

I'm not one to argue, of course,   Cheesy, but if you rotate, crop on/off/on, b+/ b, and generally move things around too much, you can not return the image to how it originated, or get it to where you want it to be. You know that by the number of times these sort of questions are asked, and the fact that a specific sequence has to be followed to get a usable result whether you are using Ultra, studio, borders or whatever. This is why I said to clear the image if it goes wrong and start again, this eliminates the frustration of trying to recover it (because you will be lucky if you can!) . If you work in metric, you are screwed anyway if you are after precision. However, once you have picked a path through it all, it works OK.

Now, you've found your path, I've found mine. However, that does not negate the fact that there are numerous 'wrong' paths. Discovering a 'right path' is the tricky part. If it were easy, we'd get no posts in the forum  Smiley

Plan what you need, learn how to do it and get it right first time! Well almost  Grin
There were no problems here wrt your comments when you posted on that previously (just needed the rotation lock off) and no-one else has commented either.
One other bit of mis-information:
Quote

The precision is exactly the same as English units, it just does not show in the size boxes. Just enter the number directly and that's what you'll get, that is if you can measure a print to within 0.01mm!
That is from the horses mouth  Wink

I agree, but I would not say I know everything despite having a work flow that produces reasonably consistent quality prints, there's always room for improvement and always more to learn, keeps the old brain cells active you know  Wink

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I have solved my problem with the following workaround:

Under Print Properties I choose M for borders, entered 1.25 and clicked on B. Then I clicked the drop-down size menu and clicked on Custom and then clicked on Enter Specific Size
In Specific Size box, I enter 20.5 x 30.5, (my 18 x 28 print, plus I added the 1.25 border) then click on Use 20.5 x 30.5
Auto Crop on
Print Orientation unlocked

Doing this, the queue now says 20.5 x 30.5 (incl. border)

I've printed with these settings, and I get a nice 18 x 28 print with a 1.25 mirrored border.

HI Jones,

Thanks for letting us know you sorted it, and letting us know how.  Smiley
