Title: Qimage on a Mac Post by: FastTJR on December 06, 2010, 06:55:58 PM For a long time I was a PC user and only ever used Qimage for my printing needs, be that local printing or generating large files for third party printing, usually at Mpix.
Earlier this year I made the switch to the Mac platform. Overall the experience has been very positive, but the inability to use Qimage without installing a Windows OS on my system was a major frustration. I have experience with Parallels and Boot Camp and while both work fine, for a variety of reasons I chose not to put either on my Mac. I now, however, have great news for fellow Mac users who have the same reluctance to install a Windows OS on their Macs. Qimage now works using Codeweavers Crossover for Mac For those not familiar with Codeweavers Crossover (http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/), it allows some Windows applications to be installed and run natively in Mac OS X without installing a Windows OS - and at a fraction of the cost. I tried this approach earlier this year but without success -- I kept getting an error message. It would seem, however, that either the latest release of Crossover, or of Qimage, has fixed the error. The only compromise is that apparently it will only run in full screen view (a bit large on a 27" iMac!) and the screen rendering of the images is poor (pixelated), but the output files are just fine. FYI - I have no personal or professional connection with Codeweavers, so this is not a sales pitch. I just wanted to let other Mac and Qimage users know their is another option for combining the two. I hope others are as delighted about this is as I am. Cheers! I'm routinely running QIU on Windows 7 64bit Virtual Machine via VirtualBox 4.02 on Mac OS X 10.6.6. Works as it normally would. The printer is actually on the local network. If Crossover is not viable for this software you could try installing Windows 2000 or XP (cheap) as a VM and running QIU on that. I think QIU still runs on W2000 (I can check if you require). Peter PS: Checked and QISE still runs on Win2000 but QIU not. I've installed in Mac my Canon MG8150 drivers. It's odd but in Qimage the printer setup gives very few properties, as you can see in the attached pic. No important property (quality image, paper's type, etc.) is avaible ... Any help ? Do you have to install windows printer drivers as well as qimage? Is it simple enough that 'the average' mac based photographer can use mac photoshop, and use qimage to print properly, or has there to be some other process? For example, what happens with Mac/pc format of image files?
If it installs, and it is simple to use and reliable, then I could see a load of potential mac customers - proper printing for around $150.00 :D. Personally I know nothing about Macs - in 40 odd years of computing, I've only touched one once - and the software crashed. Best wishes, Ray |
