There have been a few threads about how Qimage has slowed under windows 7 64.  I have no solutions but just want to relay my experience as another reference point.

I'm currently running windows 7 64 on an intel  i7 960 processor with 12 GB of memory.  After 4 months of using this machine, I'm still marveling as to how fast Qimage is running!

The program opens in around 5 seconds and what used to take a few minutes to process some photos now takes under a minute.  Of course it should be said that my old machine had a P4 processor with 2 GB mem running XP so it's quite a jump to the new machine.  My printers are the same as before though I did need to get 64bit drivers for them.  I've been using Qimage since 2001 and this is the 4th machine it's running on.

And generally, I print 13 x 19s multi-layered tiffs generated in photoshop which are between 500MB to 1GB in size.

Every machine is different and depending what is already loaded in memory and is processing in the background, speed of a given program can vary greatly between different computers.

This isn't to say that there is not a possible problem with Qimage nor negate the problems that others are having.  I'm just saying that judging from my personal experience, the slow-down under Windows 7 64 is not universal.

It should also be noted that I did not upgrade to windows 7 but had my rig built specifically to run win 7 64 and handle large files.  And I'm not saying that I haven't had problems - I've certainly have had crashes and a number of unexplained issues perpetuated by my machines own personal gremlins.

Johsef,
I also am running W7 64 bit, on a quad core machine with 4 gigs of ram, and Qimage is just as fast as ever.
Some software, such as Acronis True Image and my Uninstall Pro, and a few others run much faster. They were designed for 64 bit.

I wonder if the cause of his running slower could be that you have a newer camera, and the image files are much larger than before?
Some of the newer cameras are showing 25MB raw images and higher.
They will take longer to open and to work on.

The two cameras I use produce raw images of 25 mb, and the other 30 -35mb. The Tif files average 35 - 55 mb, some larger. I don't do Raw processing in Qimage. I use Capture One Ver 5 Pro. For an example, why should it take around 45 seconds just to delete a 54mb file from the Qimage print queue?  Seems way too long. If I delete the file in Windows Explorer, Adobe Bridge, etc. it takes a second or two, or even less.

Andy,

It really sounds as if you have a pretty bad problem there.  It would drive me crazy if it took 45sec to delete a small file from the print queue.  As a test, I dumped 10 pics into my print que -- they range from 200MB to 350MB -- they deleted instantly -- either if I tried them one at a time or cleared the queue all at once.

The assumption is that all your other programs are running fine and it's just Qimage that is having problems.  That would certainly cause one to think that the problem is in Qimage (and it may be).  At the same time, it could be a glitch somewhere that is causing a conflict with Qimage.

You might have already tried all this already but first I would uninstall and reinstall the program as see if that changes anything.  If not, I'd start checking memory use while experiencing the delays that you describe.  I'd also check to see if the problems get better if you run Qimage in safe mode -- ummm - though I'm not sure if Qimage actually runs right in safe mode - I haven't tried it.  You might also try shutting as many background programs off as you can and see if it makes a difference (including virus checkers and such).  And also make sure that you have the most up-to-date drivers for any of the printers that you have and make sure that those drivers are win 7 64 compatible.

The important thing is that others are experiencing much greater performance with Qimage than you are so some intensive troubleshooting may lead to solutions for your issues (or indeed, it still could be a bug in Qimage that occurs with your particular set-up of the program or with your particular machine)

Perhaps someone with more knowledge and experience than I have can help here.

Good Luck!!

I'll try a few of the things you suggested. Before I went with Windows 7 (clean install) I was running Vista 64 bit and was not having these problems with Qimage.  I have the latest Epson drivers installed. I have checked CPU and Memory usage in the past and it was negligible. I haven't tried turning off my Anti-virus (Norton) so I can try that.

I turned off my Anti-virus auto protect and it didn't help. While adding one 38mb image to the print queue (drag and drop from windows explorer) and also then deleting it, I looked in task manager and noticed that the only process that seemed to be involved both times is splwow64.exe with the description of  "32 bit print spooler".

My version of splwow64.exe in c:\Windows is 7/13/2009
Do you have the same date on this spool program?

I just did an automatic uninstall of Qimage and then re-installed. That didn't help to speed things up.

my splwow64.exe has the same date.

The goal is to shut as many things off to see if something is causing a conflict.  That's why I suggested safemode although as I thought about it after I posted, I pretty sure Qimage won't run in safemode but I haven't tried it.

If it was me , I'd go into msconfig and start shutting things off in the start and service categories.  Although be careful there - especially in services - cause it can create issues with booting back up (hide the microsoft items in services & you should be good to shut almost everything else off).  Whenever I have to start extensive troubleshooting, I always make a back-up image so that if something messes up, I just reinstall the image -- saved my butt numerous times.

It really sounds as if you've been doing everything correctly however something is out of whack because it doesn't seem to be a wide spread problem with other users.  It could take you a while to figure this out.  Wish I could be of more help!

I wish there was more tech support for this program. I can't think of an alternative to switch too and will just have to wait it out to see if something fixes it in the future.

I sent Mike an email. Maybe he has a solution to find out what the problem is.

Andy,

Seems to me you've been having a lot of intermittent problems with your Epson driver(s) that are not related to Qimage: errors saying the 32 bit driver has stopped responding, and so on.  I suspect the entire problem here is some issue with the Epson driver.  Since you are the only person having this problem and I know other people are running the same Windows 7 x64 drivers without an issue, it could also be some interaction/incompatibility between the Epson driver and some other system utility you have installed.  Anti-virus and anti-adware programs are usually the first to check.  I know you've disabled real time protection but often that is not enough.  Some anti-virus and anti-adware programs continue to monitor certain files even when you turn them off.  So those could still be an issue.

But for now I think the best thing to immediately shed some light on this problem is you need to try Qimage with a non Epson driver.  Try going into your printer setup in Qimage and select a different printer other than the Epsons you've been using.  For example, select one of the Windows standard selections like "Fax" or "Microsoft XPS Document Writer".  ANYTHING but the drivers you've been using.  Then close Qimage and reopen it.  NOW with a non-Epson as your printer driver, is the delay still there?  I need that answer to proceed.

Mike,

I selected an HP deskjet and then closed Qimage.  Opened Qimage and it opened quickly. Dragged an image to the queue and it was fast. Deleted the image and it was fast. So what would be the next step to find out what is going on with the Epson driver?

Next select the Epson again but do not load any saved setups or jobs.  Just add some images to the queue and test the speed.  If that is slow (without recalling any saved setups/jobs) then the driver itself is at fault.  At that point, you'd have to start Googling your model printer along with "windows 7", "64 bit" and "slow" to see what comes up.  Maybe someone else has run into the same thing.

I tried that and it is still slow. I called up Epson to see if I could install the 32 bit driver and they said it won't install. They said one other person called with this problem on Win 7 64 bit but they could not replicate it so have no solution or suggestion. Great help from Epson Sad

I also uninstalled my 3800 driver and then uninstalled my 7900 driver and then just reinstalled the 7900 driver. Still is slow. Win 7 is really great Sad
