As a longtime user and fan of Qimage on Windows, I have finally decided to switch to the Mac platform.

I wouldn't do so without Qimage, of course, and I understand Mike has had "positive reports" from at least some who have done so successfully. I do expect some idiosyncrasies however, and would like to be prepared before I take the plunge.

I am hoping that some folks here who have trod this path before me can share their experience and can save me from making too many mistakes!

The kind of questions I have:

Which is better: Fusion, Parallels, Virtualbox?
Windows XP or 7?
Any Mac setup tips (is "Bootcamp" involved? Whatever that is...)
How to manage color - what do I need in Windows vs Mac?
Passing images to QI(Win) from PS(Mac) or LR(Mac) - any issues?
What problems/quirks have you encountered - how did you fix them, or work around them?

Would love to hear feedback myself as I know some of you here are running Qimage on a Mac.  In fact, this would be a great post for me to "sticky" at the top if we get good feedback.

I cann't comment on which is best but I have been using VirtualBox for some time (2 years plus).

I have Windows 2000 and Windows 7 64 bit as guests on my MacBook Pro running fine.

Both these guests run QImage perfectly well, along other Windows only programmes that I prefer to use in association with my photography work flow (eg IMatch and GeoSetter).

All the images reside on the Mac host and are accessed via mapped VirtualBox managed shared folders. QImage printing is done to a printer attached to a linux box on my network (via VB bridged network).

I don't use boot camp because I don't see any advantages to it.

Colour management is as normally would do for QImage on a Windows PC except that the colour profiled Mac host deals with the monitor.

Using VB managed shared folders may be slower than direct to hard drive but it is not an issue for me ie speed is acceptable.

I have been using Qimage on a MAcBook Pro for 3 years or more with Windows XP SP3 and Bootcamp.
No issues in Qimage but sometimes Windows Explorer windows fail, usually requiring a restart.

I have a bootcamp folder on my Mac Pro, have the MacBook connected with Ethernet to this folder. I usually copy the files as the Explorer problem above is a problem sometimes.

I have a real PC, but only need the PC for Qimage so it's easier for me to leave the PC for the kids, and keep a clean Windows install with just Photoshop ,  Qimage and all the Browsers fro web dev testing.

Bootcamp is free, so that is why I use it.

I run Fusion on my Mac Pro  so I can print via Qimage Studio Edition with no problems, I have  run  the Ultimate trial but it seems to run slower than the Studio Edition. I love all the new features that are in the Ultimate product though, maybe someone can let us know if they are having the same experience as myself.

Yes, this has been discussed a lot earlier on, but worth mentioning again as more and more people go to Qimage Ultimate.
When Ultimate comes upon a folder that it hasn't seen before, (and if you are using it for the first time, then any folder is a first time), it will build all new thumbs followed by a cached copy of your Raw file (assuming you have raw images in the folder).
The point is, it needs to build this folder of cached images and thumbs once, the first time it encounters the new images.
After that, not only do the folders open immediately, but opening any Raw image regardless of the number of megapixels, is a 2 second wait instead of a 40 second wait.
Hence the name, Lightning Raw.

Give a chance to settle in, and you will never look back.

Hi Fred

I process all my Raw files with Capture NX2 then convert to Tif. I am very happy with Capture for my Raw conversion, especially the U-point technology along with Color Efex Pro filters.

I could probably use Ultimate for 75% of my Raw conversion.

No doubt in my mind  Qimage is   by a country mile the best printing software in the market place.
