Yes, we are on the same track. It is not just Canon. Nikon records that also. They started that back in the pro film cameras though it didn't show up to us.

My humble Canon 350D records what I think is the cumulative shot number, up to 9,999 that is, then it starts again. My camera is set to do that rather than go back to zero every time the card is cleared or re-formatted.
Is that what you mean?
I used to re-number in Qimage with "Date_Old file name", now with FP it's "Date_Numeric part of file name" so the cumulative shot number is included. Am I missing something here or has jrh missed that the "Numeric part of file name" option is now available?
