106  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Qimage, Epson driver, Windows 7 annoyance on: April 26, 2010, 06:25:44 PM
Seems to be working today. I think giving the Qimage and Epson processes higher priority and being more patient helped. It may be my imagination but I think it takes longer for the Epson driver window to pop up in Windows 7 then it did in Vista.

I mount them on foam core and spray them and put them into frames with no mat or glass. I have a few 24 x 30 frames and the largest blank edge is about 1/4 inch or a little less. Otherwise the edge of the print will show. I can always get some 24 x 29 frames made in the future if I want to use those Exhibition Fiber sheets as large as I can, but am trying to get by with what I have at the moment.

Thanks.  I guess I will just have to alter my paper ordering to coincide with how this printer was designed. I ordered 3 boxes of 24x30 Exhibition Fiber on sale at $2.62 a sheet, thinking I could print borderless. I'll have to use them for 17x22's, 17x27's, (etc) or 24 x 29 1/4 inch prints.

109  Mike's Software / Qimage / Qimage, Epson driver, Windows 7 annoyance on: April 25, 2010, 04:56:37 PM
When I click on the print button in Qimage to print to one of my Epson printers I can't see the Epson printer driver window unless I bring up another application window first, and then bring up the Qimage application window again. The way I do this is click another application icon on the task bar and then click the Qimage icon on the task bar, and then I will see the Epson printer dialog window. Anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks,
Andy
110  Mike's Software / Qimage / Largest cut sheet print area with an Epson 7900 on: April 25, 2010, 12:13:00 AM
Does anyone know if there is a way to expand the cut sheet print area using Qimage on an Epson 7900? I called Epson and they told me that a cut sheet has to have a minimum 3mm blank leading edge and 15mm blank trailing edge, and can only be borderless on the sides. I would like to reduce the blank amount on a 24 x 30 cut sheet of Exhibition Fiber, especially the trailing edge.

Thanks,
Andy
111  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Help - Qimage slow in Windows 7 64 bit on: April 25, 2010, 12:06:09 AM
I found a free application called Prio that enhances the task manager priority options and lets you save a priority for a process so next time you boot or the process is started it will remember the priority. By setting the priority to high on Qimage and the Epson driver processes it seems to have helped with the limited printing I have done since.

My 8 bit Tif files after Photoshop processing generally range from 25mb - 80mb. Most are between 50 - 80mb.
113  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Help - Qimage slow in Windows 7 64 bit on: April 24, 2010, 01:41:07 PM
I just started Qimage after a reboot and a 20 minute wait after it was at the desktop. I went into task manager and set some of the processes and services I thought might be related to high priority, instead of the default normal. I tried recalling a job, deleting an image from the job, and bringing up the Epson driver properties window.  When I first recalled the job, for about 15 seconds or more, task manager said Qimage was not responding. Is that normal? The services and processes I set to a high priority included Qimage, Epson bidirectional, and SpoolSv. When I bring up the Epson print properties window from Qimage I get a second Qimage window in the task bar and both say not responding for at least 30 seconds, as does task manager. Deleting an image from the job seems a little faster but still takes about 10 seconds. CPU usage was between 3% and 20%.  Is that normal? Does the size of the image matter (in the Qimage print queue the average size of the four images is 275 mb).

Anyway to set high priority on all processes and services related to Qimage and the print driver / spooler permanently?

Is there a way I can permanently give Qimage and the Epson driver highest priority?
115  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Help - Qimage slow in Windows 7 64 bit on: April 24, 2010, 12:34:19 PM
The printer and computer is not on a network. I am plugged into a router but have turned sharing off on my Epson printers. Next time I use Qimage I will turn on task manager and watch resources when I try to do a delete or bring up printer properties. I don't think resources will be an issue but I will check it again.
116  Mike's Software / Qimage / Help - Qimage slow in Windows 7 64 bit on: April 23, 2010, 11:49:29 PM
I have been having a problem with Qimage being slow with certain functions since upgrading to Windows 7 (64 bit) last November. I never had this problem with Qimage under Vista 64 bit. Some of these problems may be with the Epson driver, but not all of them. When I delete an image that is in the print queue it takes a long time to complete the delete. When I click on the printer properties icon to bring up the Epson driver window it takes a really long time. If anyone has some suggestions as to what may be the problem I would appreciate hearing from you. I have 12 GB of memory and an I7 CPU. None of my other applications have slowed down noticeably since moving to Windows 7. I only print to my Epson printers with Qimage so I can't say if I would experience these issues with Photoshop, but maybe I should test that out.  I can't envision myself printing photos outside of Qimage because I like the application so much and have been using it for a number of years.

Thanks, Andy

Thanks. I remember reading that article and was wondering if anything has changed, because I will be getting my first printer with a 16 bit driver.  I read one review of the printer and the reviewer was saying there was a noticeable difference in quality with some images if they were converted and kept as 16 bit images and then printed on the 7900. I can't remember what review stated this.

If I print a 16 bit Tiff file in Qimage with the Epson 7900, which has a 16 bit print driver, will I retain the 16 bits through out the process? If so, should I consider using Pro Photo RGB instead of Adobe RGB?
I don't have the 7900 now but will be receiving it next week. Up to this point I have always worked in Adobe RGB 8 bit from raw conversion to printing.

Thanks,
Andy
119  Mike's Software / Qimage / Slow accessing print properties and printing with Windows 7 on: January 09, 2010, 01:03:36 AM
I am having a few different problems with Qimage under Windows 7 - 64 bit, that I never had with Vista 64 bit. Whenever I access the printer properties or start printing it takes a lot longer to respond than it did in Vista. I have a fast hard drive with plenty of space, 12GB memory, and an I7 processor. The video card is a GeForce 9800 GT with 1GB memory. I am also occasionally getting a 32 bit printer driver stopped working message when I try to access printer properties and the printer properties window is under the Qimage window and I have to click another window, then go back to Qimage to see the printer properties window. Any help would be appreciated. I have been struggling with these issues since Windows 7 came out. I did a clean install of Windows 7.

Update: It appears the 32 bit driver not responding message has gone away again (not sure if this will come back or not). Perhaps it has something to do with using recalled paper settings. The GeForce 9800 card is new today. It eliminated black screens popping up when doing a print preview with the Epson driver from Qimage that I was getting with an Asus GeForce 9600 video card.

120  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: v2010.107 issues/comments on: January 08, 2010, 10:17:19 PM
Update - I went into control panel, printer properties (Epson 3800) and changed it to not spool and print directly to the printer. This eliminated getting the 32 bit print driver error message and stopped Qimage from locking up.  It seems to take a long time to come up with the print preview window, longer than with 64 bit Vista. From the Qimage window if I click on the print properties button, to the left of the print button, it still displays underneath the Qimage window and I have to click on another window and then back to Qimage to see the print properties window.

That only worked for awhile. The problem with the 32 bit driver not responding message is back. This is very frustrating.

Things seem to have settled out for the good, for now. I read through the forum and saw the post about RAW Spooling and changed that. Reinstalled the Epson print driver. Recreated one Qimage printer/paper setup. These changes along with the new video card seem to have eliminated the errors. It still seems to be a little slower to come up with the printer dialog boxes but from what I have read from Mike's postings that is most likely not a Qimage issue. If anyone knows of any settings I should check to speed this up please let me know.

Andy
